I carry both a kahr p9 and a colt 1911 IWB in the summer. I chose them both for different reasons, but they are both very thin, they point well, and they go BANG erery single time I pull the trigger.
    I'm married to my Kahr.

I'm all for buying new guns, and a 1911 is a great addition, but with a Smart Carry there is no reason you couldn't wear a swim suit without a shirt if you wanted to.
There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.

If you like the XD, why not get an XD 40sc? Personally, I like the Glock 19 or 23c, but recently added the Glock 26 (a sc 9mm). I have not carried the 26 yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so during the summer for another option.

    Summer carry gun

Look at the Glock 36. You can't hurt the finish, its the size of a Colt commander(kind of) and its .45acp.I carry a 642 with speed strips in my front pocket most of the summer, but if I go to certain parts of the city I'll carry the G36 with spare mags.Try one you'll get hooked.

    I carry a Commander size 1911 all year in a VM-II.

As was previously mentioned, why not go with the XD40 subcompact? I've got the XD9sc and conceals very well. Shoots like a champ, too. The 40 is the same diminsions as the 9, so I know it will carry just as well.

I'm not sure you really need to get a different gun for summer carry. With some cargo shorts, a good belt and an straight-hemmed shirt you should be able to carry your xd IWB just as easily as in winter attire. Now wanting a new gun is another matter enirely! :)

    summer carry

I prefer my glock 26 (my glock 19's little brother) in the summer. I'm a big fan of the 9mm, and when carrying automatics, I prefer to stick with it. On the other hand, when I'm "feeling revolver-ish", I carry my all time favorite, .357 ruger sp101 2 1/4" stainless.
