I gotta say go with the defender. I had a SA GI Micro and it was a nightmare as one member said earlier. I had FTF's and FTE's and it shot brass back at my forehead...OUCH!!!

I say Defender or G36...both great guns IMO.

Since you're in B'burg, I'd recommend not buying anything until you visit Aaron at Trader Jerry's on 4th Street in Salem. He's a great guy and always has a lot of cool stuff in inventory.
Another great resource is Roanoke Firearms, on Cove. They generally have a nice stock of used 1911's and new stuff everyday.

I have a defender and a Springfield Micro compact operator loaded. They are near clones. The Defender had an extractor issue that I resolved and I have not had a chance to test the Springfield as of yet. The Springfield has better sights and a better trigger, but also feels a bit stiff compared to the Defender when racking the slide (might be too stiff for weaker shooters). Size and weight wise- no difference, the appearance edge goes to the Defender if you change the grips (ny opinion). My Springer has the XML tactical light and the factory rail mount. All in all when you figure the Springfield lifetime warranty,I'd have to say I still cant choose a winner.

Have you considered a Glock 36 at all?
