    Thumb saftey on the XD

Does anyone seem to know about this? I saw the ad in a magazine and then went to the website to research it. They dont really tell you much about it. The only gun I see it on is the four inch service model. Is it available on any other model? When I asked the guy behind the counter at my local gun store he looked at me as if I was the biggest idiot in the world. He told me there was no such gun!

I read an article that says that the XD will soon offer an OPTIONAL thumb safety. May take a while for the production to catch up with the marketing.

The XD 45 is available with and without a thumb safety. Currently that’s the only model with the added safety, however I heard a rumor on XDtalk.com that Springfield will the rolling out the other models sometime soon.
If you want to contact Springfield for more information you can do so by :

IMO...it is overkill...how many safeties can you put on a pistol? keep your finger off the trigger for pete's sake!
the XD is a fine firearm, and to each their own I guess.

I understand that some law enforcement and military applications require a safety, hence to get the business Springfield is adding that gizmo.

The gun world is always changing and there's so much to know... the gun counter guys aren't always as knowledgeable as you'd hope.

Actually, the addition of a thumb safety as an option, makes a great deal of sense on the XD 45 service model. Their competition in the world of military contracts have a thumb safety and this gets them into the game. Also from an operations standpoint, with the thumb safety and grip safety the platform has a similar manual of arms ( not the smooth single action trigger ) of a 1911. Yes, I understand that internally its very different. For someone who shoots 1911's this gives them an excuse to buy another new pistol and maybe their first one in black plastic!

Before the SOCOM trials were cancelled, one of the specifications was that the gun have an external, manual safety, hence the addition of a safety on guns currently under consideration by the military. The Sig P220 was the only firearm exempted from that specification because it was deemed safe for carry with the four integral safeties that grace every Sig classic P-series.

    +1

That's one of the main reasons I got rid of my 1911. I don't like safeties, and went back to Sig.

    Much happier now.

Many have that opinion and including I. Not everyone is comfortable carrying a gun that’s ready to fire, this opens up doors to people who don’t want to carry without an extra safety. Springfield is making XD’s with and without the safeties to accommodate everyone.
