    S&W debate

I go in to the local shop today, not expecting to find anything unusual. What a surprise! Having been on the hunt for a S&W 610 for a couple of years, I find not 1, but 2 (6" and 4"). As fate would have it, I scope out the used guns before I go back, and see a gorgeous Model 28, a worn Model 19 (both from a collection, I assume, as they both came in at the same time), and a 686+. I won't say what the outcome was, but what to do? I will say, the 610 and the 686 are on the list of "like to have"

Buy them all. Does this shop have a layaway plan?

The S&W 610 is harder to find in my patch of the jungle so I would recommend buying it first. Say, you didn't happen to see a S&W 696 did you?

    S&w 610

Of the guns mentioned I would buy a S&W 610, in your choice of the two barrel lengths. I could have bought one of these when they were being produced by S&W, and regret having missed the chance. Now they are fairly scarce and the prices have gone up for them.

I like N frame S&Ws in general, and the option of shooting either 10mm or .40 S&W ammo through one gun is very appealing. I have a Colt 1911 in 10mm, and it is a great caliber.

Here is a photo of a 610 and a link to a review article on the web:

Me? I'd get the 4" 610 and try to wipe the big smile off my face before I got home.

Assuming that the 610 and 686+ were not lock equipped revolvers, I'd choose the 686+. More rounds on tap, and cheaper to feed being the deciding factor. Internal Lock revolvers are unsuitable for carry, for me.

If the 610 and 686+ were new S&W revolvers, I would take the model 19. The factors in my decision being that the 19 is IMHO the best carry revolver ever made, and it has everything you need in a revolver, and NOTHING YOU DON'T. Sadly, it appears there will not be any revolvers as nice as the 19 produced in the future either.

    Good luck choosing! Regards 18DAI.

I'm with 18DAI. Model 19 first followed by the 28. Prices on the
28's are going up so it may be the better investment and like the 19 it is a great shooting revolver.

The 610 (4" if it were me) as it is much harder to consisitently find one when you want it. The 28's and 19's are fairly common.

I have always loved the S&W revolvers and I buy them when I find a good bargain. Steve48
