    Charter arms 44 bulldog questions

I put a charter arms bulldog pug in 44 special on layaway today I got it for for $280 out the door used but in very good shape. My question is what exactly do I have here? What I mean is the gun's box is says "charco corp" but the gun itself is stainless steel with a two and a quarter inch barrel and marked "charter arms corp" "stratford conn.".

So is this one of the charco guns with the bad reputation or one of the newer charter arms made guns? Wern't the charco made guns marked as such? And my other question is if this is one of the new charter arms made guns then hows the quality on these guns?

"Charco" is the crap version. The "Stratford" guns are the best. You got a bad box, I'd sugest throwing it away before it infects the great gun you have.

FYI the newest Charters are "Shelton" and are decent.

mtbiker the charco made guns were marked charco were they not? also where were the charco made guns made? and the box matchs the gun as the label has the same serial number? Could this simply mean the box was left over and the shelton made gun was put in it for shipping after the company changed hands?

I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill here. Don't worry about where it was made or if the box is "correct". It could nothing more sinister than a left over box.

Here's my advice. Shoot the thing! If it's reliable and shoots to POA, keep it. If it's a piece of junk, get rid of it. Keep the box either way, tho.

.44 Special is cool and any of those Charter Arms Bulldogs I've handled are pretty nice. Made nice tight clusters of fat holes in paper targets out to reasonable distances.

Not sure about the box....but if it says Statford on the barrel,it's a good one.I have one I bought used from a buddy for$200..I was surprised w/ the accuracy and smooth trigger(It may have had work done).I bought a pair of the "rubber combat grips"from the Charter arms web site.It makes the grip the size of a j frame..I actuallly pocket carry it.

My wife has a newer one and she loves it. Seems to be a pretty decent gun for the money.

I beleive the Charco guns were from Bridgeport. Sounds like a left over box right at the change.

I have one in for repair right now at the factory. The little safety spring between the hammer and pin would not operate correctly. Sometimes I could get 2-3 shells fired other times only 1. Although it would make indentations on the primer - but on the ones that did not fire, you could tell it was not stiking hard enough. Thought we had bad ammo at first. Over all a nice gun - you can have issues with any firearm. I think you are getting a fair pricing on that 44.
