Yep - glad you had the link Dirkster - indeed Justin, that thread is dealing with quite a lot about those.

I am well tempted but can't decide on the big or std dot version.

What are the reasons given in the video for them being the "best" and who produced the video?

I'm an instructor for my department. I make it painfully clear in all of my classes that while I will readily offer up what is "best" for me I readily accept that other methods may work better for other shooters.

I need to add that I don't intend my above comment as a slam towards anyone. I just get leery abput blanket "best" statements.

As for the sights themselves I have considered them. I have never shot a pistol with them, but I have handled a BHP with them, and they are easy to aquire.

I had them on a Springer XD Sub. I really liked them. I had the big dot version.

I have a set on my wife's Combat Commander 45 and they're okay for defense, but if you want to place precise shots (bullseyes) forget it. But you can pick them up fast on the draw, even in the dark...mine are tritiums. But even so, I don't think I'll put them on anything I might get in the future. I'm more likely to use different color meprolights. Say a bright green front dot and orange or yellow rear dots. That's what is on my Sig P245 and likely what I'll put on my next gun: An H&K USP 45. Christmas? I hope so.

Just a thought. The big sights are obviously to see the sight quicker and easier. I was told by the manufacturer themselves that you will give up a bit of precision to gain faster sight acquisition. So, one, you won't be quite as accurate with them as you would a conventional sight, but you purportedly will be faster at self defense ranges.

Second, if you point shoot out to 21 feet, the large sights would be detrimental since they would be a distraction to your eye, and past 21 feet, you'd probably be better of with the precision of more conventional sights.

I have the big dot set on my Para P-12. There fine on that gun because of the shorter barrel(less range). I would only use that gun for anti-car jacking device and carry(of course practice to stay proficient). But I'm not going to use them on anything else. Heine Straight 8's on everything else that I'll carry(for the guns that don't have night sights already).

A set came on my last DW 1911; after 400 rounds or so, I am converted. They're very fast to acquire (one eye or much faster if using both) at the already known loss of precision. As it's my CCW, speed is the name of that game, but FWIW, I have no problem hitting where I am at any engagement ranges.

I've also seen a 1911 using a (nice) mixture of the Big Dot in front, with a NOVAK half-ghost as the rear sight; it seemed to work very well indeed.
