Which other guns to consider (comparable to Glock 27)

I started to carry a Glock 27, and am reasonably happy with it. Now I am wondering what to get next ;-) . Here are my requirements:

    - similar size to Glock 27, not significantly larger (maybe even smaller?).
    - can be heavier. just not larger.
    - .40 S&W (I want to stick with one caliber)
    - nothing too exotic, so i got a good selections of holsters and accessories to buy.
    - it may become my primary carry. So reliability ease of use is a must.

How about a backup Glock 27? Keep spare parts around to service 2 firearms. Same mags and holsters for both. Lord forbid you ever have to use it to defend yourself it will become the property of the police for a while. You would still have another to carry.

If you don't like that idea, I would look at the M&P compact. I'm a Glock man myself but between the XD and the M&P, I choose the M&P.

My first thought is the Kahr P40. The CW40 is good if you are on a tight budget, but the P40 allows the use of night sights. It also has a match grade polygonally rifled barrel.

I have a P40 and couldn't be happier. You might also consider the MK40 which is smaller but all-steel and therefore heavier. It only affords grip with two-fingers, however, so recoil may be difficult to control.

    I have an MK9 and it's a tack-driver.

Unless you want to carry a .40, consider the Glock 26. Same as a 27 but in 9mm.

I just got mine and the recoil is substantially less.

thanks for the suggestions so far. I will check out the Kahr next time I go to a gun store. Based on a quick Google search, some people don't seem to be too happy with the Kahr quality.

Another 27 may actually be the best way to go. I rather not get a 26. Its not only the headache of needing to stock up on two different calibers, but I would also be afraid to mix up the magazines under stress (is this an issue? Seems to me like the magazines are almost identical).

A lot of people don't know how to read manuals. When I first got my P40, I had many malfunctions. I was not chambering the first round properly by locking open the slide, inserting the mag, then letting it drop by releasing the slide-stop.

Once I read the book and realized this was the way to do it, I stopped having malfunctions. Zero problems and I've got well over 1200 rounds downrange thus far. This is a very high quality firearm. It doesn't like Hydra-Shok, though... at least that's what I had the most problems with in the beginning. Since switching to Winchester Ranger RA40T, I've not had a single problem with those, WWB, or the reloads I bought at the gunshow. Kahrs are not cheap guns!

My dad has a Kahr PM40 that he carries daily and really likes it. It hasn't had a single malfunction and is a super compact little gun that packs a punch. He had to put a slip on grip condom to make it easier to shoot more than a few magazines because it is pretty snappy but other than that he thinks it's great.

Honestly, with your specified requirements, I can't think of anything other than the G27. My best summertime carry option had been my G27, and still is most of the time, but since I got my G19, that is seeing more of the outside world lately. That being said, I think you'd like and be able to deal with the G23 if you conceal the G27 very well. My choice of IWB holsters will fit both models very nicely. For me, transitioning from the sub-compact G27 to the compact G19 is almost a non-issue----just a tiny re-positioning of the holster forward. By the way, do you have the finger extension on your magazines? Ten rounds?

    IMO, my top three;

    1. Glock 27
    2. XD
    3. M&P
