Best out of the box 1911?

I am looking at 1911s and while shooting IDPA yesterday, I had an experienced shooter tell me to buy the best gun I could. He said go ahead and pony up for the best because you will continue to trade up to it anyway. I have heard great things about many manufacturers of 1911s , Sig, Wilson Combat, Kimber, etc....So, I am hear to ask, who makes the best 1911 straight out of the box?

You forgot Colt, which would be my choice...However the market in 1911s is so vast, it's really a matter of doing a lot of research and fondling. Good luck.

That experianced shooter is also wise. STI makes a great gun for IDPA, second choice for me would be a Kimber. Wilson and the other high end makers are great guns, but I fail to see where the value is for the normal shooter.

I think for the money I would buy a Kimber. There are alot more expensive 1911's on the market, but Kimber still delivers a great 1911 at that price...and remember a 1911 is like an AR, you can swap and change almost anything on it...so you can customize it to your liking...if you buy a lower end 1911, pieces don't just 'drop in' like they do on the nicer 1911's, some smithing may be required.

I am not limiting to the manufacturers listed. They are just a couple of the ones I have heard a lot of great feedback on straight out of the box, not requiring further tuning or work. I am sure there are more and I am throwing this out so I can build a list that I can go and put my hands on to try out. Thanks for your help!!

If you are wanting something that you can go pick up from the shop tomorrow, I would say a Kimber, either one of their Custom Shop Models Kimber - Continuing The Legacy or their Match Models Kimber - Continuing The Legacy

If you can afford to wait, Fusion Firearms does custom builds and I have heard great things about them. I sent my order in a week ago, and the guys there are great. They asked me what I wanted, what I was going to use it for, and some other details, and sent me an pre-invoice that had all of the parts they were going to use for my approval. Great guys to deal with, but it's going to take 2+ months to get it to me.

And of course Wilson Combat, Nighthawk and Les Baer make great 'out of the box' 1911's.

There was a thread recently where somebody had a similiar question, you might want to check out some of the suggestions he got there.

+1 to that, I am partial to Springfield Armory. They have awesome 1911 pistols for very reasonable prices. I don't see the need to pay over 1000 dollars for a 1911 that does the same thing as a 800 dollar Loaded Springfield 1911, but then again I'm a budgeted gun nut. I'm sure if I had all kinds of crazy money to spend on a gun, I would probably buy a 2,000 dollar Ed Brown or some high end custom make 1911.

In my book, Springfield Armory. Kimber is good too but I like the Springers.

I've heard great things about Springers but my Dan Wesson is, by far, the tightest and most accurate 1911 I own. No series 70 stuff to worry about and down right sexy to boot

Buying my 'third' Kimber...will pick it up in a week or two...out of the box they have been perfect...
OMO...but anyone can get a 'lemon' regardless of the price...if it's mechanical it can have a fault...
I have not found that to be true with any of my Kimbers...both external and internal extractors...using Kimber mags...imagine that...

In all fairness, many other makes of 1911's can be great guns, too! They can also come with problems...
Kimbers just felt sooooooo goooooood in my hand.

I have two Springers, one Kimber, and a smattering of others. The Springer Champion, highly modified is my avatar.

I have found the "loaded" springfields to be outstanding guns right out of the box. I think they are a custom gun without the custom price. The loaded models go through the custom shop at SA.
