    My No-Nonsense Carry Pistol

I got a new 1911 today. The tossup was between this Rock Island Armory or a Springfield for $100 more. I liked the looks and feel of the RIA better.

This is the gun pictured with the Wilson #47 7 round magazines I use for carry.

Shooting this pistol, I was impressed. It feels like quality - and though some will consider this blasphemy, it feels much like the Colt 1911A1 sitting beside it. I personally could not tell the difference.

After shooting it to see where improvements could be made, and... for the first time, I couldn't find any that I just had to do. Everything is tight and functioned well. I did have one failure to feed, but that was during its break in period.

Regardless, I did take it apart and smooth things up with an India stone and, while I was in there, I threw in a Wilson spring kit.

Then I went out to break in the new springs, and sight it in.

This is semi-rested (forearms) at 7 yards, five shots.

I'm almost positive the fliers were all me. While sighting in I initially used seven rounds, and five went into the same hole with two fliers. This happened twice.

The sights are crude but serviceable. I can see them and have no problem with their size. In fact, for fine shooting, I really like them.

Their are only a few external modifications I plan to make. First, and as you can see in the picture already done, is the ambidextrous safety I fitted in deference to my "handicap."

Second, the hammer's biting my had. I wasn't wanting to go all out on a Commander hammer and beavertail as I do like this look, but I've got to do something. I'm open to suggestions. I figure if nothing else, I'll bob the hammer for the short term and find a wide spur hammer with a shorter spur.

    What do you suggest?

Third, I might, someday, send this off to get new sights put on it. The Charles Daly did instill a fear of dovetails however, and so we'll have to see about that.

However, the biggest issue right now, by far, is the trigger spur.

Congrats on your Rock! I love mine. I had hammer bite too and just had a tactical hammer & beavertail installed. My friend also threw in a Wilson trigger and tightened her up a bit. I didn't have any issues (except bleeding from the webbing on my strong hand) in over 2,000 rounds. My friend is installing new sights (fiber optics) right now. As I age, mil-spec sights just don't get it anymore (I got spoiled with the sights on my Taurus PT1911). Enjoy your new Rock - it won't let you down.

Simple is better IMO, nice gun. Perhaps just shortening the spur slightly and rounding it out a little will solve the bite problem.

    Sixto,

That's what I'm thinking as I'd rather not lose all hammer control.

I just hate matching bluing... :D

You can always make it "black" like your safety lever.

I believe Rock Island Armory 1911s to be the best value on the market.

I have several and they all are accurate and run well.

    RIA customer service is superb.

They make a 5" tactical with good sights, a 6" match 1911 that is a tac driver, and a few different compacts.

    Good selection.

The two Rock Islands I've shot are really nice. Pretty good triggers and not too tight. I believe most 1911s are too tight. I'm impressed with them so far.

Going to shoot my son's Rock Island some more tomorrow.

I've got a drop in and they pinch my hand between the frame and the beavertail. Thanks though.

    Yup. Common issue with those.
Bob the hammer. As far as "bluing," you don't have any. I think what you're looking at is park'ing. Personally, if it were my gun, I'd just throw another hammer and strut in it and call it good. Then, a sear, then a disconnector... oh geez, here I go again.
