Would like advice on a gun to purchase
I'm hoping that those of you with far more experience in this than I can assist me by coming up with a list of guns that meet the criteria I'll set forth at the end. I know everyone has their favorites of these, but if you have some verifiable feature/design/quality that would distinguish one of these guns please let me know.
1: No active external safeties (i.e. passive are ok, trigger safety, grip safety).
2: Single stack (or a very narrow double stack to accommodate a very small hand).
3: .40, .45, 10mm or some other largish caliber (with the highest preference going towards the .40)
4: Price less than $600 (the lower the better obviously).

That's got Glock G36 written all over it. I don't know what you think about Glock, but that's what immediately comes to my mind with your criteria. I'm a bit biased though, and I've never owned a G36 but thought about it more than once.

S&W M&P compact...with changeable grips to fit most any hand.
No external safeties. 6.5 lb. trigger pull. Very easy to conceal.
Oh, and available in .40 in compact, .40 & .45 in full size.

The changeable grips allow you to tailor it to your hand.
The situation will NEVER BE THE WAY YOU WANT, it WILL BE THE WAY IT IS. You must be FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO ADAPT and just "DEAL WITH IT".

I have small hands for a guy. My wedding band is a size 7. I can shoot my XD-45 Compact just fine. I carry 11 rounds loaded, and a 13 round back up. It has a trigger safety and a grip safety. At 25 yards, I can put all 24 onto an 8 inch target easily.

No Glock 36SF that I'm aware of. 30SF yes, but it's a double stack.
The Glock 36 is a very small single stack .45 ACP. Sounds like it fits the bill perfectly if you can find one for under $600. I have ordered from Topglock several times and had good luck with their service. They should be able to hook you up.

G23 would probably cover it. It's a doublestack, but still pretty thin. Light, perfect size for carry, reliable, and a whole slew of aftermarket parts, accessories, etc.

you can easily find a Sig P239 used for under 600. You may also check around for one of the factory refurb German made (German Police trade in) Sig P6 models in the $300-400 range, depending on where you find one. The P6 is 9mm, and since you specified 40 or larger then I'll go back to the 239
can't beat a sig

You did not mention size or weight in your question. Are you wanting a full size gun or a Micro? How do you intend to carry? All steel or is composite ok?
Have you looked at the Kahr CW40 and CW45? Very reliable, accurate and easy to carry, not melted as much as other Kahrs, and conventional vs poly rifling. All in all lots of bang for the buck in a micro .40+ caliber.
