    Colt diamondback .38special?

I'm curious about these guns as my local shop has one in for $450 and its like new. Its a 4" blued one in .38 special. From what I can gather these guns were downscaled pythons and built on colt's D-frame. I believe the python was an I-frame,what were colt's frame size designations ? I was also wondering how accurate these guns are,are they on par with the pythons for quality and smoothness of their action?

What if any leather fit the diamondbacks? and are there any cross compatible leather IWB rigs out there that will fit them, like how some S&W 686 rigs fit a python perfectly? I'd been looking for a python but would be hard pressed to pass up colt wheel gun in such nice shape for this price. Also I do feel that a .38special,out of a 4" tube with modern ammo being what it is is more then enough for social purposes. Thanks guys for any help on this.

If you're in a position to do so...BUY IT!!!!!!!

Like-new Diamondbacks are going for this:

GunBroker.com guns: Colt Diamondback 38 spl Nice (item: 102971626 ends: Jun-27-08 01:20:15 PM)

GunBroker.com guns: Colt Diamondback 4” 38SP Nickel, Engraved Stag Gri (item: 103279740 ends: Jun-29-08 08:59:04 AM)

GunBroker.com guns: Colt Diamondback Nickel 38 Cal (item: 103038189 ends: Jul-03-08 1104 AM)

Yes, it was a D-frame, like the Detective Special and the Police Positive Special, but with the vent rib (I've always wanted one, but can't ever afford one ). Leather advice may be found here:

    Owned one for 17 years

I owned a Colt Diamondback .38 with 4 inch barrel for 17 years, but unfortunately do not still have it. I bought it new in 1968 for about $125, and it disappeared mysteriously from my house in 1985.

But it was a wonderful gun - well made and solid, with an excellent trigger and beautiful blue finish. I used to shoot it frequently at the range, and it was very accurate. It looked almost identical to the Colt Python, but was smaller. I should have replaced it by buying another one, but consoled myself by buying a Colt Detective Special (same frame as the Diamondback) and a real Colt Python.

I am still amazed when I see used Diamondbacks selling now for $800, which is over 6 times the amount they sold for new 40 years ago. I wish I had bought several hundred of them and stored them, rather than some of the pathetic stocks I bought instead.

The Diamondback is another one of Colt's good ideas that they let slip away from them.

I purchased a Diamondback from a guy at work, a few years ago, whose wife 'didn't want a gun in the house'. He'd fired it 12 times. He asked me if $250.00 was too much!!! (Of course I said, "NO"!!).
It now rests in my wife's nightstand, as her defense pistol. Smooth as silk and she shoots it VERY well!!!
Don't wait to read this ---- RUN back to the store and buy it!!!!

I see my hopes of buying a diamondback fading rapidly,I want to thank everybody who told the guy to buy it for crushing my hopes and dreams,I'm sure over time I will start to get over my "loss" with intense therapy and a bookcase full of self help books I may be able to find a reason to drag myself out of bed every day.
