Speculation by a very knowledgeable person on another forum was that most .45 ammo is designed for 5" bbls and shorter ones lead to this problem.
Sounds reasonable as a factor. I just shot some cast stuff in a 5 inch gun with the PVD finish-flat blue black, and the gray showed up badly and dulled the fiber optic sight a bit. Some powders are smokier than others, that may be a factor, too.
The low pressure of 45ACP rounds results in a less complete burn than high pressure 9MM .40S&W etc. rounds. The result is more crud being deposited on and in the gun.
I normaly shoot an M&P40 or M&P9 using the same powder as my friends that use 5" 45ACP's. Their muzzles will be grayed out after 150 rounds or so while mine remains clean as when I started.
One friend decided to shoot with his light attached to reduce muzzle flip. After 100 rounds the light was useless due to a soot layer blocking light.

Reason: add barrel length comment
I plan on having my 45c finished in teflon/electroless nickel like 2 of my other M&Ps by Robar. This will negate the burnt powder problem. I can't say enough about this finish, it not only makes the gun smoother in operation but also makes cleaning easier.
The 45 compact is now my favorite M&P.
I'm going to be buying my second CCW in the near future and was going to get a Glock, but have been giving serious consideration to the Smith & Wesson M&P Compact line of handguns. I've read a number of great reviews on the M&P series but none really got into how reliable the M&Ps are compared to the tried and true Glock line of handguns.
So how do they stack up reliability-wise compared to Glocks?
For all us enthusiasts for the 45c and are hopeful for a Crimson Trace LaserGrip for it, I have started a thread at the Crimson Trace forum to collect our requests. M&P 45c LaserGrip Request Thread.
Speak up by adding your request and hopefully it will encourage Crimson Trace to help us.
