    Rock Island

I have a chance to purchase a rock island 45 (commander size) for next to nothing. The price is right but I want to know if it is a reliable brand. Will they go bang every time? Please no "You shoud buy a kimber" comments.

A Rock Island in Commander config? SNAG IT!! Those are not real common. Most reports on them are positive they are a good basic 1911 and all the ones that I have handled are well built and a great value. This is coming from a Kimber owner.

Had a RIA GI. Roughly 1000rds-no problems. Only problem, old eyes can't see GI sights so hot anymore. Traded it for RIA Tactical. 1200rds fmj & jhps - no problems. It's as accurate and has best trigger of any of my 1911s. Commander version is a rare find.

I have a full size (tactical)--I like it a lot. I've put a couple of thousand rounds through it, no problems to speak of yet (had a few FTF's, but it turned out it was with Colt mags--never a problem with the Novaks it came with, McCormicks, and Kimber mags).

RIA's are good pistols for the money.

Mine has been a good gun. The sights are rudimentary, but it has been a sweet shooter, and really reliable. If the price is right, go for it.

Rocks normally don't have a lot of bells and whistles. If it goes bang when you pull the trigger, and runs fine then I say go for it!

Last I heard, Commander-size RIA 1911's weren't that common. From what I hear, GREAT customer service, and great value for your dollar.

I owned a RIA govt model 3 years ago for a short time. It performed with no issues at all for at least 2k through it in a year. Buddy of mine didn't have a lot of money and wanted a 1911, so I sold him mine at a huge discount to put him into a gun for home defense [ he's not into carrying at all ].

He's had no issues with it at the range in over another 2K through it and is very happy with it's performance. Low end basic 45's, the RIA's are a good value for the money.

Ivan runs RIA, I've spoken to him several times via email and phone. Excellent customer service if you have anything that needs to be fixed on his products.

+1 on customer service, I had a officers sized RIA that broke the recoil spring guide after 500 rounds. Sent it bak to RIA they repaired and returned it in less than two weeks.

I 've had my RIA Gov't for about 2 years without any problems. I take that back. The original recoil spring was too light and I did have a few FTE issues. I replaced it with an 18.5# Wolfe spring and haven't had any issues since. Like others, my eyes are to the point where mil-spec sights just don't cut it. So, she's getting new sights at this time. It's hard to believe that such a low-end 1911 could be so reliable. I carry my Taurus 1911 and will probably go back to my Rock when I get her back. The Rock, unlike my Taurus, will take mil-spec mags, Chips, Novak and Taurus without a hiccup. The Taurus doesn't like mil-specs for some reason.

I recall a RIA customer support story I read about elsewhere, where a guy who owned an Armscor 1911 purchased years before Ivan and Co. were handling customer service had some fairly severe issues with his gun. From what I recall, with no questions asked, RIA had the owner send the gun to them, and it was replaced.

A bud of mine bought one at a gun show last Sunday, he is very happy with it. I think it is a great gun for the price!

    Cheers! M2
