This man is fast. He posted a question at 10:16 AM today, received several answers, and by 4:42 PM he reported that he bought the recommended CZ-75.
I know it is too late, but I was going to recommend the Beretta PX4, which fits his specification pretty well. It holds 17 rounds in 9mm and has a thumb safety and external hammer, which he wanted. They cost in the $500 to $550 range on Gunbroker.

Wonder why no one suggested the Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm?

Did they add thumb safety's to that line?

I heard a rumor that they intend to, as an available option, to comply with some LE organisation specs, Military requirements/specs (or something like that). If so, it may be available by now.
Stay safe,

Hmm. . . . I dunno. I thought it already had a thumb safety. Sorry, I dont own one but I found it odd no one mentioned it.

Actually, since my post I found one of my G&A magazines with a pic of a full size .45 M&P with a safety on the cover. Like Chuck wrote in his post, it seems that they may be adding them for a hopeful military contract (or so it seems).
