This is a discussion on New S&W M&P 45 Compact within the Defensive Carry Guns forums, part of the Defensive Carry Discussions category; Just got a couple of these in and took some pics for everyone.
I have average size hands and even with low profile magazine, my ...

Not trying to digress, but I have a question. Last weekend we had a gun show, and I went intent on looking seriously at the M&P and XD polymer pistols. While handling the M&P, I noticed there was a plastic plug on the back of the slide. Can someone tell me what that is/for? I was kinda put off on the M&P once I saw it, but don't want to pass judgement on the gun not knowing what it is.
How does this related to the M&P Compact .45? Well, I am looking for a lightweight compact .45 to use as a out of state travel gun when I don't want to risk one of $1K Kimbers getting stolen in my luggage.

It is what S&W calls the "Slide End Cap" similar to Glock's slide plate cover. To the best of my knowledge, as I am no gunsmith or expert, it not only protects the firing pin, but is also a stop for the firing pin so it doesn't spring out the back of the slide.

The back plate is nothing to be concerned about and simply holds the firing pin in place. You would only have to remove it to change out the firing pin.
The M&P's are the best polymer pistol on the market (IMHO) and would suggest taking one for a test drive.
I handled an M&P Compact 45 at the NRA convention in Louisville and I have to say this is the neatest one that S&W has come out with. The pistol just felt perfect in my hand. I found one online (Bud's Gun Shop) and bought it and it was shipped on the 15'th, so I am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. I predict this will be one of S&Ws best selling handguns. If you haveven't handled one yet, just wait till you do and you'll want one.
