Indeed it is, Mike.

My primary carry weapon is a Kimber Ultra Carry. It's been extremely reliable and accurate. You should be able to find one under your $1000 limit.

You didn't specify a caliber. I carry a 4" Kimber Pro Carry HD II in .38 Super. It's dependable, accurate and I only paid $600.00 for it brand new. The only modifications to it are night sights and new Bubinga grips. I now carry it in a Milt Sparks Versa Max II I bought from Az Husker.

Pretty hard to add too much after JD's and other's posts (but I will)
I have a Springfield Loaded 5" SS and a Springfield LW Champion. I do like the "commander" sized Champ for carry though I have a bit of a problem with the grip printing. Recoil would be less with the S.S. version of the Champion. Hard to beat Springfield's warranty and customer service.
I lust after the DW CBOB after shooting an example in 10mm. (I'd get the .45, though.)
I shot a 9mm, 5" STI the other day. Very nice. I may buy one for shooting plates (and helping to extend my stash of wheel weights). STI has a great line up of various sizes and calibers.
From what I've read on various groups, people seem generally pleased with the service and warranty work with both Dan Wesson and STI with the highest marks going to Springfield Armory.
Any Dan Wesson hands down.
After that, a real Colt.
A Kimber Ultra CDP II (my EDC)...or a Kimber Compact CDP II would serve you very well, IMHO.
Stay armed...with Kimber...stay safe!
