Since it will double as a carry gun - my vote is for the Glock 27 or 23. At home, load it up with a Glock 22 mag/sleeve. On the go, use the stock mag and carry a couple of 22 mags as spares. This way you get the best of both worlds out of one gun. You can carry the 22 mags in a 23 also. Or either the 22 or 23 mags in the 27 - the 22 gives you a few more.
I'd say a Glock 21 or HK USP45.
They're both .45, have 13/12 rounds respectively, light rail (given, if you want to use a light other than a UTL, you need to get a rail adaptor for the USP), and are bombproof reliable.
The G21's grip thickness/angle isn't for everyone, however; handle one, or better yet, shoot one before you buy it. The new SF frame does help for some people.
The USP has a number of different trigger options if you don't care for the traditional DA/SA w/safety & decock. The grip also has a more traditional angle & isn't as thick.
I have both, I like both, and both have done nightstand duty.
