Looking for Help from S. Florida Members

Hi. Newbie here. Thank you all for this nice forum.

By way of introduction, I'm relatively new to guns, have gone to the range a couple times, taken a couple classes, and have signed up for some private instruction as well. I took my CWL class yesterday, and though am in no real rush, would like to start the hunt for the best carry gun for me. I've been lurking on every forum, website, etc., and know a lot about the available choices, but as I learned quite quickly with full-size pistols, what I thought I might like, based on reading, turned out to be only true sometimes (e.g. hated Glocks, but loved the XD9). I figure that my carry gun will be an even more personal choice, and though I've held the Kimber Ultra and Pro, the SA EMP and XD sc, and a couple others, I also want to shoot them and maybe others before buying, since I also learned that liking the way a gun feels in my hand and how well I like shooting it can also be quite different. I don't like the idea of tossing out maybe $1000 to end up hating what I just bought.

Anyway, my range doesn't offer any good rental carry choices for me, and the couple guys I've met so far there seem to all carry larger weapons than would suit me (I'm a med-size female). Does anyone is the S. Florida area (preferable WPB) know ranges that offer compact and subcompacts for rental? I'm hoping to get to know some folks at my range that might have one or more, and wouldn't mind letting me shoot if we were around at the same time, but I'm a newbie there, too. So, any advice or help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Can't help on the range question, but if the ones handy carry the CZ75 compact or the P-01 give them a look, not full size, but not sub compact either. My wife is 5'5" and she shoots a CZ compact 9mm, and loves shooting my P-01 9mm as well. Then again she also likes to shoot my P-06 which is the P-01 chambered in 40 cal.

    BTW welcome too the forum.

By WBP did you mean WPB? If so which range are you going to? I don't recall seeing any of the guns you mentioned available as a rental at any of the 3 ranges in Palm Beach County.

The Wife and I live in WPB and own several of the guns you've mentioned, 9mm SA EMP (the Wife's carry gun), SA XD 9sc, and Kimber Ultra Carry II (although it's on it's way back to Kimber for repairs). We might be open to meeting at a range to let you try them out. If you'll PM me with some contact info (phone or email address) I'll have the Wife contact you and see what she thinks (she's way more outgoing and people friendly than I am)

Thanks for the typo notice. I just edited in a correction.

Yes, I meant WPB, and I've been going to the Delray Shooting Center, as it's 10 minutes from home, though I know of one in Lake Worth that's almost as close, but I haven't yet been.

I'll be sending you a pm shortly

I don't know if any of the ranges around there have one, but my wife and I just rented a Firestorm 380... also known as the Bersa Thunder 380... but we like the grips on the firestorm better... and I was so surprised that I actually really liked it. She hadn't really been able to find a gun she liked but after five shots she was ready to buy the rental off the shelf! Sorry I can't help you on anything else!

Delray Shooting Center is our preferred range. We try to make it there every 2 weeks or so or at least once a month.

Although I've only been a couple times, I'm really comfortable there, with the staff and customers alike all being very friendly and helpful. My instructor was saying that he knew quite a few women shooters there and maybe we should try and get a Ladies Night together. I work most weekday nights, but maybe your wife would be interested.

Agreed. Laura and I love the staff which is what keeps us going back there even though other ranges are closer. I'll mention the ladies night idea to Laura, depending on the night she'd probably be very interested in it.

Gator Guns off of Military trail and Okeechobee, I believe, rents compact size guns. I shoot there and, at times, have taken some new shooters with me.

I would definitely suggest pm'ing Limatunes about your dilemma; she is the authority around here for women's carry issues. I guarantee she'll have sage advice for you.

That being said, some carry guns you should definitely consider:

    Glock G26
    Smith and Wesson M&P 9c

Either one is an excellent choice, plenty of ammo, and very manageable recoil. I lean towards the M&P for the grip angle. Invest in a Smartcarry holster and you will be all set.

    Have fun!

I just wanted to thank azagthoth! He and his wife met me at the range and let me try out their guns. I liked both the EMP and XD SC, but ended up buying a Wilson KZ-45. Go figure. Not what I was thinking about, but after shooting it, I just loved it, and that's the way it goes.

Anyway, anagthoth and his wife are both wonderful people. Thanks again, and I look forward to seeing you both again at the range.

Did I mention that I really love my new gun

    Welcome...

    ... from Miami. :)

American Gun Range may be a ways off for ya. It's about a hour South of WPB.

FYI it's not American Gun Range anymore as they have a new owner. The previous one is now doing time in Federal Prison for illegal arms dealing.

Just what we needed... more fuel for the Brady Bunch :(

Anyway, Arizona Gun Range might not be too bad of a drive should you feel like venturing South.

    Guns and Knives Inc.

They are located on 441 and Commercial Blvd.

They have a whole wall full of guns for rent. Go ahead and give 'em a call to see if they got what ur lookin' for.

    Welcome aboard. Be safe.
