Can only pick one: H&K, Walther, Sig
If you can only pick one. It has to encapsulate your range gun, CCW, and home defense in leu of a shotgun. I have, HAD, a Walther PPS till my wife fell in love with it. So I'm going to buy an all-in-one. I want it in 9mm and my max is 1,000. I have shot a Sig (US Coast Guard), and of course my Walther, never an H&K though..
On a side note, only 46 more days till I'm done with my year long deployment....WOOO HOOO

I would LOVE to own a Sig, but unfortunately right now funds won't allow that. But have you thought of the XD lines? At 1000 bucks you could reasonably get a sub compact and a service size, but you can't go wrong with either a Sig or a HK. I've heard too many "ehs" about some of the walthers that make me want others. But of course the new James Bond shoots the P99 :)

I'd pick a Sig 250 with a DAO trigger.

I chose Sig. of the two you listed.
But a Glock 17 or 19 would be my next in line

Got to be 9mm huh? Well, most folks know my choices for anything other than the 45acp are Glocks. However.........if I had a grand to spend on nothing but a new pistol, and out of those you've mentioned, I would probably go for this:
Handguns by Heckler & Koch - HK P2000 PISTOL 9MM COMPACT 3.62" LEM BL W/2-13RD MAGS by Personal Security Zone

I vote H&K P-30.
Light, fits my hand like a glove, and never has had a jam or misfire.

If you're looking for a CCW, I say go the polymer route with H&K. Since you're looking for a 9mm, check out the P2000 or P2000SK. Or if you want to carry cock/locked look into the USPc9.

I have to say . . . SIG P229
I have 3 Sigs and they have been 100% reliable. My P226 in .40 has had over 10,000 rds without any problems.
Lately I have been carrying my H&K P2000sk more. It is also super accurate, reliable and almost disappears in my T&T Gunleather IWB. The only reason I would not say H&K is that I dislike the location of their mag release. For EDC it is Ok since I am not expecting to have to do a speed reload. But if you are considering a more everything gun and my get into competion at your local range, IDPA etc. The Sig IMO is the better choice.

I don't see too many wrong choices in your list ... the only caveat being that all of these guns are kinda wide for carry. But, you want one gun to do it all go with a Sig.

I would like a Glock 9mm, but since that is not on your list and I don't know much about H&K 9mms, I would go with Sig. If it didn't have to be 9mm, a H&K USPc .40 would be my pick.

I'd go for an HK P30 with the "light" (4.5#) LEM trigger. I have that trigger in my .40 P2000SK and it is awesome for SD as well as range. My HKs, both the SK and fullsize USP .45, have been wonderfully reliable and accurate. You really do get what you pay for.

um...what? lol
So you recommend a H&K in 40 and Sig in 9...even though both companies do offer either caliber...i'm sorry i dont get it.

In all honesty, HK is better engineered for the .40 (the USP was designed around the cartridge) and Sig (subjectively) feels less big-n-blocky in 9mm, compared to HK, to many people.
