I went to Wannenmacher's gun show here in Tulsa today. I hadn't planned on it, becuase for eight or ten years now it seems to me that the powers that be at the gun shows have been trying to make money off of them instead holding sort of a friendly swap meet.
But my best friend called me this morning and he was on his way from Bartlesville, along with a buddy and the buddy's brother-in-law.
They didn't have to twist my arm much to get me to go, either. I could renovate one of the rent houses, or go look at guns. No choice, really.
Well, I found what I take to be a pretty old LNIB Smith & Wesson Model 36 Chief's Special - - WITH said box.
The box itself is a find. It is cardboard with some sort of laminate or finish that is pebbled- almost leather-like. It has metal staple-like thingies on each corner. The box is dated April 15, 1955.
The owner's manual (such as it was at the time) and the original (unfilled) warranty card were in the box, too. I ought to fill it out and send it in!
The lady who sold it to me told me that it belonged to a Judge in Memphis who bought it and never shot it. He just put it in a drawer and forgot about it.
It's a nice story, and I choose to believe it. If the gun has been fired, it hasn't been fired much. The chambers are slick and the bore is a mirror.
Anyway, here are some pics. I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I do!
Sometimes, you're in the right place at the right time. I've been there a few times, but I think I'm lacking for the average. You definitely sound happy with your find, so I figure it's a brilliant one. Most of us wouldn't know what to look for, or if it was the best deal in the world. I say congratulations and enjoy! Any pistol with some history is something to behold.
Hey Randy, you done good! That's a very attractive Chief's Special. Really cool to see the factory stuff that came with it. That little revolver would be worth a factory letter.
Great find, Randy. I found a couple of great deals at Wannenmacher's in April. I believe there are at least two great deals at every gun show. The problem is finding them before someone else does.
When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier.
