Ruger SP101 owners have a question about grips
I was wondering for those here who have an SP101 do you prefer the factory grips or something else? I ask as I have an SP101 that I fit with hogue mono grip and it works very well, but doesn't lend well to pocket carry which is how I carry this gun 95 percent of the time.
Do you feel that the factory grips do a good job of taming recoil and making the gun easier to control? Also where can i get nice set of black pearl like inserts for my SP101? thanks

I prefer, and use, the old style of SP101 stocks with the wood inserts.
If I had to use something else, I'd go with a set of Pacmayer Compacs.

Yes, absolutely.
Perhaps the Hogue would reduce felt recoil some more, I dunno. But the factory grips are great, I shoot .357 frequently, not painful at all, and they conceal as well as anything you will find, except maybe some of those secret service type, but they don't even cover the back of the grip frame and I shudder to think what they'd feel like on impact.
Dunno about the inserts. I bought some inexpensive wood ones from feller on eBay who makes them.

Nice holster OhShoot.
I also shoot mostly magnum rounds through my SP101. I find the standard grips to be plenty forgiving and they don't snag clothing either. I use grip inserts from 42 magnum on the ruger.com site, you might want to check with him. RugerForum.com :: View topic - Custom Grip panels & Inserts by 41 Magnum.

Really!
Ya know, it was partially due to seeing yours a good while ago that first put me onto Bullard.
(dmbullardleather.com for anyone who's wondering)
I have switched to XD SC for EDC lately, but as you can see in avatar, it's still one of David's Dual Carries.

I think that the stock grips "compliment" the SP101 the best.

I prefer the original grips because I pocket carry my SP101 much of the time. If I were to carry OWB a lot, I might switch to larger grips. But as it is, the original grips and gun just barely fit in some of my pockets.

I use stock grips but wish I could find some nice wood grips that fit my hand. I love the Badgers but they're too big for my hand. I tried the eagle secret service grips and they're a bit too big too. So I tried pachmyr compaq grips and they're nice as are the stock grips. Just wish I could find some smaller wood grips for the SP101. At present mine sports the stock grips with some walnut inserts.

how do the badger grips handle recoil on this little .357? Do they beat on your hand pretty bad or what?

Factory grips, with Chestnut wood inserts from 44_Magnum. Work well with all ammo, and look good.

1911luver,
I find even with hot loads it tames the recoil pretty well. The Hogues are definetely best at doing this, I just think they are too big for my carry needs. If nothing else just get some Hogues for the range and then switch out whatever kind of grips you want for carry.
