22 Magnum For Defense
Does anyone here use a 22 Magnum for defence. The reason I ask is because I have been carrying my 22 Mag J frame on Sundays because it is so light and easy to conceal.I know the 22 Mag is not the perfect round but it is better than nothing.Plus I always carry at least two guns.

The .22 seems as potentially lethal as anything. After seeing the .75 inch marine plywood backstop after a range session all ripped to shreds after using only .22LR I would say as long as you are on target you should be ok.

I'll carry a NAA PUG once in a while when my attire requires it. It's better than having nothing at all but as soon as my Seecamp .380 is ready, the PUG will probably just end up being a safe piece/novelty item. The Seecamp should suffice for those days when I can't carry anything bigger.
I keep it loaded mostly with 30g .22WMR CCI Maxi-Mag TNT. I also have some CCI .22WMR shotshell available for possible snake duty.

Rule number one in a gunfight is to not be there.
Rule number two is have a gun, so any gun is better than nothing. Having said that, a .22, magnum or not, would not be my first choice.
If I read your post correctly, you always carry two. So the .22 is your BUG?

There's an NAA 22mag Black Widow that sits in the offside back pocket as backup to a fighting gun almost everyday.

Then I'm curious. What's one more day of carrying the J Frame if you do it the rest of the week? Unless of course I'm misreading and you're talking about carrying the .22 as a backup to a 38.

Most people would advise carrying anything that small, however when I was an LEO I investigated a shooting involving a woman shooting her ex with a Smith M48, a .22 magnum. One shot through the chest dropped him on the spot. She used HP ammo, but it went clear through him.

The related story about the 22mag passing clear through him is one of the selling points of my carrying the 22mag in the back pocket as a backup fairly regularly. Even in HP, it has penetrating ability, and I think penetration is very important.

Well the other thing is if it doesnt penetrate it just bounces aroung like a pinball. I know that is grisley but i have seen pictures and seen video of the devistation a 22 can do to the human body.

I was thinking of a .22 myself, the sales guy at the gunshop I frequant said that is what he carries everyday and during his time on a police department, it was his BUG. I am not sure I would be comfortable with it to save my life, but one good placed shot would be all it takes. During my CCW class, most of the people that used the insturctors weapons (he had four to choose from) choose the .22 and they had better placed shots than most of those carrying larger.
