    Clean my gun too much?

So I was talking to my fiance and her mom yesterday about guns. Her mom is POST certified and a former LEO. She remarked on how she hated cleaning her gun when she carried one and I told her how I loved cleaning my gun. My fiance then said, "Nick cleans his gun once a week", and her mom said, "Even when you don't shoot it?". I explained that it's not a full cleaning, I just take the slide off and lube the rails, guide rod, end of barrel, and blow it out with compressed air. Her mom seemed truly surprised that I did that kind of maintenance as often as I do even when I'm not putting rounds through it that often? So here's the question guys. Do I clean my gun too often? How often do you clean your guns. Describe your maintenance plan if you will.

Due to the elements and conditions beyond my control, I clean very often sometimes once a week and sometimes daily. It all depends where I was working and what I was doing that day. A dirty auto ain't very reliable.

IMO, there's no such thing as cleaning your gun too often, as long as you don't over-oil or whatnot.

That being said, I generally only clean mine after they've been fired. With the exception of every now and then (after a few months of sitting, should that happen) I'll re-lube and spray some rem oil on mine.

Sorry bout that Hydrashok, something along those lines should have been in the poll as well. I heard Glocks were designed to function perfectly with only 5 drops of oil. Have you heard that?

I clean my EDC every week. I dont know about the rest of you, but, mine collects lint and dust just from being holstered. This bugs the crap out of me. I field strip my 1911, re-lube and function test every week. I use BreakFree w/CLP and a Q-Tip to lube the slide and rails, clean the bore with a swab then reassemble. I wipe it off every night before going to bed.

All my other weapons get cleaned every 6 mos unless I shoot them, then I clean after each use.

I clean a gun after shooting (with in a day or so).

    If not used, I clean a gun at least once a year + / - a month.

I like to put a quick patch / snake down the barrel (say the night before) I go to the range (mostly pistols). Patch / snake the barrel an hour or so after coming in from hunting (for rifles). When hunting with a pistol, I'm a little lazy, and would wait till the end of the season or after shooting.

I have a SW MP9 and I *clean* it only after I shoot it. Every couple of weeks or so, I'll take off the slide and make sure everything is all lubed up.

Guns aren't terribly delicate, so I don't see a once a week maintainance being too much...just don't over-oil it. What do you shoot?

No sense in subjecting them to the unnecessary wear with the handling and disassembly. I clean mine after shooting. The CCWs are examined and wiped down daily.

I said "once a week" but in truth, I only check the bore and lubrication of my carry gun that often.
