I don't have any experience with the S&W other than handling at the local shop. They feel pretty good.

Smith & Wesson M&P gets my vote. There is also the XD line from Springfield.

Do you know if the M&P is a single or double stack mag?

Yes...but don't take my word on it. Ten seconds with Google will get you your answer, plus a lot more information in the M&P.

The M&P is double stack. You can find more technical information here at S&W and at M&P forum.

Glock 19, XD9, FNP-9, are all great guns and are right at 499.00 at most all store I have been to. I carry the XD45c and I love it, the glock 19 will be my next purchase, followed by the FNP-40. Here are links to the web sites. Springfield Armory

The M&P also gets my vote. You may also check out the Kahr CW9 series.

Should be able to find CZ's in that price range as well.

I have a Taurus PT 24/7 Compact 9MM. I like the overmolded grip, and the way it feels. Felt recoil is low, even less than my Ruger P95DC. My 13 year old son likes the way it shoots also. They cost about $390 with all taxes and paper work.

Being one of the less experenced crowd, here is my sugestion:

Smith & Wesson SW9VE. Very, very simple to operate, feels very comfortable in my and seems to perform quite nicely.

    Good luck and Happy Holidays

If I were you I would want to go to a store and handle four or five of the ones that have been decribed and pick maybe three that feel best in my hand. Then I would go to a range that rents them and shoot about 100 rounds though each one (probably over three range session).

To me, that is the minimum I would like to do so that I know how they feel and how they shoot for me before I selected a carry gun.

20 bucks in ammo is cheap when looking at a 400 to 500.00 gun, fondle a couple and find one or two that firt your hand point well and have decent triggers, then rent them at a range and put some rounds thru them to see which one fits you, then buy a gun vault to keep all the strays in that show up afterward
