Ive hunted archery for the past 5 years in PA and am going to start hunting next year at college at WVU in mornagtown WV. My only concern is the predators. I know that their are a lot of bear in the area and even mountain lions. WV hunting laws state that its illegal to carry a pistol during archery season. What can i do because i want to carry one for safety???
Use the bow.

yea the bows going to do alot against a bear or mnt lion thats going to attack...good idea
The odds are you will get attacked on the street before you'll get mugged by a bear or cat. Unless the bear has cubs the bear won't bother you. You most likley wont have any notice if a mountain lion decides to make lunch out of you. shooting a bear or cat out of season you better have proof you were being attacked, just like on the street with the bad guy. Most states will keep firearms, vehicles etc. if your convicted of shooting out of season.Plus pull any license or permits.

yea i know that the chances are slim but the number of bears in coopers rock (the location ill hunt) is alot. not to mention their is a mountain lion sanctuary in coopers rock as well, so obviously theyre around. i love archery hunting its just that going that deep into woods where you know bears and mountain lions are doesnt thrill me. ive never even considered carrying a pistol in PA because we dont have the same numbers of bears/mnt lions as coopers rock.
im just basically curious as to what would happen if im dragging out a doe during archery season and a game comission officer stops me and sees that im carrying a .45?
Since you can't legally carry a handgun I would recommend you carry the larger can of pepper detterent spray for bear/predators that are marketed for this purpose. Most sporting goods and hunting stores will stock them.

never actually thought of that...im sure it would do exactly what it says, "deter" until it runs out. but if a predator wants me that wont stop them.
kudos for the idea though
If you are that afraid of predators don't go hunting, the law is the law.
umm thanks for the great advice redbird
If WV law prohibits carrying firearms during archery season, as you state, then you are obligated to obey the law. Nobody on this forum is going to advise you to violate the law or commit an illegal act. That is against the forum rules.
If you choose to violate the law, that's your choice. Just don't post it here.
I suggest you review forum rule #10.
