Sig 229 vs. 239 - width and concealment

One of the guns I have my eye on is a Sig, either a 229 or 239. While there are small differences in barrel length, etc., when I overlay them, they seem virtually identical in footprint.

The primary difference is the width. The 229 is 1.5" wide, while the 239 is 1.2". This is because the 229 has a staggered magazine instead of the single stack.

I like both, and in the absence of any other difference would probably get the 229, but wonder about the width difference for carrying IWB. It's in the grip rather than the slide, and therefore above the belt.

For anyone who has carried both, or similar guns, has that grip width made any difference to you?

I have both and have carried both IWB. I found the 239 to be much easier to conceal.

Just my opinion, the 229 is better looking and the mag capacity would get my vote. Have fun with your decision. Either choice is a winner.

    I used to have a SIG P229 in 357SIG and still have a SIG P239 in 40S&W.

The difference in the grip IMHO was huge and although I could easily conceal either, the P239 was just easier all around.

Plus carrying two spare mags for the P239 was easier and less cumbersome than two spare mags for the P229.

    I sold the P229.

    I'll never sell the P239.

I'm a 1911 fan 'cuz they are thinner and seem to conceal better than most. I also have medium sized hands. With that said, I've shot both the 229 and the 239 and have found that the 239 fits my hands better due to the thin profile of the gun. If it were me buying, I would buy the P239 SAS.

I also had a P229 and a P239 in 40. I also still have the P239 and sold the P229. I also have small hand and like the feel of the single stack a lot better.

I carry 1 extra mag. If I can't take care of a attack in 14 rounds I need to quit. I guess some guys wants to carry a case of ammo with them I do not feel that is necessary.

I own a 229 & a 239.....Can't tell any difference in concealment. The holster makes the difference. I usually carry a full size 1911, so both of those are smaller.

Handling is different. I have large hands, so the 239 feels a little small.

For IWB carry, the grip is not below the belt line, so the comfort for me is the same....The 229 just may print a little more.

(I should say HAD a 239....my wife swiped it....)

Grip width made a huge difference... personally I did not like the small grip feel of the P239, and ended up selling mine... I'm considering the P229 as my next purchase after going to the range to try one out.

I currently carry a P239; I used to carry a P229. For me, the P239 is easier to carry and my trigger finger can engage the trigger easier, especially in DA mode. However, despite short fingers and small hands, I shoot the P229 better, even with a stock (as opposed to SIG short) trigger

Both are heavier n' heck. I carried the P229 for quite while, and found it to be weightier than my XD, even fully loaded w/ 16+1!

I own both the 229 and the 239. I carry the 229 about 85% of the time and the 239 the other 15%. I have never noticed the difference in the guns much from a concealment perspective, as I don't have issues with hiding either. The 229 is not the lightest thing going out there, but, not bothersome to me. Such a dilemma..Luck. BTW, Happy New Years...

I have owned and carried both. I found the grip of the 239 to be easier to conceal but much more difficult to shoot well with. I tried a friends 239 with larger wood Hogue grips and found the gun much easier to shoot and control. Unfortunately the Hogue grips also made the 239 grip as wide as the 229. I have since sold the 239 as I could see no rational for an 8 shot .40 in the same package as a 13 shot .40
