How to determine particulars on an old Colt 1911

Evening friends, I was emailing with my brother who lives 500 miles away. He has an older Colt (he calls it a "military issue Colt") that he never uses and has offered it to me. I suspect this gun is 15+ years old. I have been thinking about getting a 1911 of some sort, and it seems he may have one. He knows nothing about handguns and I suspect this gun hasn't been cleaned or oiled in years. Do you think this weapon might be usable? How can I determine (long distance, mind you) if it might be worth buying from him?
    Thanks

Price? Like all things, price determines if one should buy it or not.

He would probably just give it to me (but I will want to pay him a fair value) so pricing isn't a consideration at the moment. Just want to figure out 1. what exactly he has, 2. how old it is and 3. if it is in any shape to use/repair/restore.

    Thanks for all opinions.

Get the numbers off the gun and some here can tell you! (OD where are ya?)
We will be much better off when we learn to deal with things as they really are, instead of how we wish them to be!

This will tell you if it is an older Colt:

    Serial Number Data

If you can get the markings on the slide, that will help identify the model. With the model, we can check the Blue Book of Gun Values for an estimated value. That book is quite useful for that purpose. We can look it up for you with enough model information. If it's a Colt and goes click it's worth at least $200. Probably more. Possibly much more.

If it truly is a military issue Colt, it's much older than 15+ years, the last new ones were purchased by the Government in 1945.

Pictures and the serial number would be of great help.
The pistol could be worth multiple thousands of dollars, or it might be worth only a few hundred, depends on what it is and how original it is.

This page will be very helpful to you too.

I'll add this web site, as well.

Hey, thanks a bunch for all this information. My brother is supposed to send a picture and document the markings. I will share if and when I get them.
    Thanks again.

OK I will post as soon as he gets back to me. He's not real prompt on emails so it might be a few days. Stay tuned.

I'm really looking forward to seeing a few PICS. I love the vintage Colts.
