I just bought a ParaOrd PDA 9mm 1911 in a 3" barrel. Only fired 50 rounds so far, I think I'm going to like it. Too soon to tell.....(sure like the LDA trigger)

    Sorry, I know it's not 3 1/2 " but its close.....fwiw....

Kimber makes the Aegis Ultra 3" and Aegis Pro 4" both in 9mm. Here is a photo of the Aegis Ultra.

Well I'm a dope, I missed the 9mm portion of the question.

    I don't think anyone makes a 3.5" 9mm 1911.

3" is about all you're going to find and as stated above, STI, Para, Kimber, Springfield all make 3" 1911s.

From what I've read, the EMP from Springfield is an amazing little gun... well worth the price tag if you have it to spend...

I owned the EMP and the Aegis. I think the Aegis is a better gun..my opinion from shooting them and taking them down. In the end I sold the Aegis, as I am a left handed shooter, and it did not have the ambi safety as on the EMP. Both were flawless in operation right out of the box, unlike most 45's. Luck.

Capacity isn't listed on their website, but if I'm not mistaken, with a 9 or .40 you get one more cartridge in the mag, that would mean 8 in a compact frame, 9 in a full frame. At least that's how my Kimbers were.

Actually, I've been sleeping quite well, I can't even use that as an excuse, I just glossed over the 9mm portion, I think I was confused by the 3.5" requirement.
