ok. so nobody will say it...so i will. you should really look at a nice 1911. I recommend a Kimber, Colt, or Sprinfield. They point and shot will, come in many configurations, and .45 is great for HD, and personal defense. There are other calibers out there besides .45ACP, but I don't remember those! lol

For carry, find something you can shoot well and also conceal well, takes some testing out different stuff. If it's your first pistol, you will probably adapt to whatever you choose
For home defense, buy a shotgun and learn how to use it!!!

Although I am a 1911 guy my recomendation is to look real close at Sig. For a first-time handgun buyer you can't go wrong and it's a gun you'll have and enjoy for the rest of your life.
However, as stated above, get what feels good in your hand, a gun that you will shoot often. One that is reliable and goes bang every time you pull the trigger.
Once you choose your gun, get lots of training. All you can afford.
Remember, your mind is the weapon, your gun is just one of your tools.
