    Rock On!

I hope I am not repeating an existing thread (may the forum gods forgive me and move this if needed ), but do any of you have experience with Rock Island Armory guns? I just purchased a 1911 in commander size and though I haven't gotten it to the range yet, I have read a lot of favorable reviews. And for the price, I couldn't resist. Pic here.

Nice piece, not a Commander sized gun though, that's an "Officers" size gun.

    Size difference

Sorry, I thought if the barrel is under 4" and the grips 4" or less, then it's a commander. Is this wrong?

Yes, a Commander is 4.25" bbl (or 4" pending on exact model and personal thoughts on the matter) and a full frame.

The term Commander comes from a model of Colt Called the Commander, others have different names for similar sized guns, Kimber calls their 4" guns "Pros" Springfield calls them "Champions" etc.

I generally refer to 4" guns as Commanderish.

    Thanks

Thanks JD. No matter what you call it, I'm looking forward to heading for the range to make it go bang!
In this case, the barrel is 3.5" and the grips right at 4". It's my first 1911 and I sold my Taurus Millenium to buy it. Gonna miss having 11 rounds of .45 (I get 7 + 1 now), but the RIA is thinner and more concealable.

Let us know how it shoots.

One of these days I want to pick up a RIA and see how well they handle.

That would be a RIA compact model, mine shoots great and at 10 yards will blow the center out of the x ring,

Sweet looking gun. Can I ask you what you paid for it?
