    Colt Commander Range Report

Well, my new Colt Commander has now been to the range twice so I decided it's time to do an official write up. Short version: I love this gun. Since you all are so detail-oriented I'll elaborate a bit. The first time out, I need a bit of time to familiarize myself with the recoil of the .45 and with the trigger. It's a little sloppy, there's just too much take-up before it engages. I'm learning to work with it, but an action job is definitely on the list of future enhancements. I fired about 120 rounds of American Eagle 230 gr. FMJ on the first outing and the Commander performed flawlessly. Accuracy was so-so, due to my poor shooting skills (that's why I joined a range). My brother put a mag through it and shot out the center of his target, so the gun is definitely up to the challenge.

On this second range trip, I fired another 130 rounds of FMJ then loaded up some JHP. The Commander fed and fired 20 rounds of 230 gr. Hydra-Shocks and 20 rounds of 200 gr. +P Gold Dots without a hitch. Accuracy has improved drastically now that I'm more familiar with the trigger and have concentrated on improving my technique. I shot out the bullseye with a single bullet several times at 25', but still can't do it consistently. Based on 290 trouble-free rounds (knock on wood) I'm now comfortable using the .45 as my backup HD gun (primary is a Mossberg 500). The +P Gold Dots were surprisingly tame, I expected them to really pound on my hand and wrist. I shot them last and honestly had a hard time distinguishing the recoil from a standard 230 gr. load. I noticed that both defense loads had a brighter flash than the FMJs, has anyone else noticed this?

I've got three new magazines coming in the mail within a week or so, once they get here I'll need to get some more ammo and thoroughly test them, then start carrying it as soon as my Max-Con V arrives. Fully loaded it is a bit heavy, but if Gary's work is as good as I've been led to believe it should be managable. And since no range report thread is complete without pics, here are sample targets from range trips #1 and #2. The black and white target is from outing #1 with 24 FMJ rounds, while the black and yellow target is from today with 20 Speer Gold Dots, both shot at 25'. I count at least 16 rounds on the target from today's session, which ain't great but isn't a bad place to start either. Thanks for looking and for providing such a great forum, I've come to rather like it here.

25 ft. Thanks for the compliments guys, but I know I need to improve. When all 20 are in the 7 ring at that distance I'll be a lot happier.

Not bad at all - and good the gun functioned so well for you. No prob's over ''commissioning'' that piece

The trigger take-up is not too difficult to tweak yourself as far as I recall.
