    1911 Style - .40 S&W

I am kicking around adding another selection for my EDC and wanting your thoughts on my proposed new weapon. Today I will normally carry a BHP in either 9mm or .40, or a Walther P99 in .40. I am considering adding a true 1911 style (not another BHP) compact to my OWB, strong side carry. Yeah I know the .45 makes a bigger hole, but I don't care to add another cartrige to my inventory.

So your thougths on a 1911 compact in .40 S&W are most welcome.

The only viable option is the Springfield EMP in .40S&W. STI makes a compact 1911 in .40, but I don't have any first or even second hand experience with them.

Colt used to make the Defender in .40, but it's discontinued.

I've had two Kimbers in .40 and they were less than ideal regarding reliability.

Para currently only makes one gun in .40, that being the P16-40, the P10 was once offered in the .40 but it is also discontinued.

The Springfield and Colt are on my short list... thanks for the insight. I really appreciate it.

I believe Bob Serva over at Fusion Firearms can build you a compact in .40. You may want to contact him also. More $$ than your list so far, but hand fit and custom. My own Fusion Bobtail Commander with Ion DLC coating should be done in the next couple of weeks.
    Good luck!

Kimber will make one if you ask. STI also has a nice selection. Magazines are not always available. Wilson just recently started 1911 mags for 9mm. I do not know if they are considering .40s.

My choice would be the EMP since it was designed as a chopped 1911. Using a 1911 for anything other than .45 will sometimes create a problem. And Springfield's customer service is great.

In most shooting sports competition you will find a STI .40

I know that you said you don't want to go .45 but that platform was designed for it and that is just simply what works best!

Mec-Gar, Metal Form and Tripp Research (Cobra Mag) all make .40 1911 mags.

I was going to recommend the Colt Defender in 40 until I saw JD's post. When did they do that? I have one and love it.
We will be much better off when we learn to deal with things as they really are, instead of how we wish them to be!

A while ago, I'm not saying the Defender is discontinued, it's just that Colt doesn't currently offer any 1911s in .40, they never were big sellers.

Understood that. Just surprised me they weren't making the 40 anymore! Does that make mine worth more??
