What 1911? and what not to buy?

I was sitting back the other day thinking about all I have and the things I dont and what I would like to have.
The one thing that kept coming to the top of my list of what I wanted but did not have was a 1911.
I have owned and fired alot of firearms in my life but I have never owned my own 1911

    My question is.
What company do I want to look for?
And what company do I want to stay away from?

I do not have a ton of money, but I want settle for the cheapest I can find by a long shot.
I want a great reliable, good shooter, well made NICE 1911 (45acp of course) that I can target shoot AND carry when I want to carry it.
I do not want to go low end and get some brand everybody knows to be sub-par. But at the same time I cant afford some of those high price tags you find. Best quality at the best value!

Any help you can lend me?
Brand List from best to worst?
+/- of some of the brands?
Average price for the brands etc..??

    Thank you
    Brandon

RIA is a good shooter and can be had around the 400.00 price range or the Springfield armory GI line

Springfield is probably the best bang for the buck as a basic 1911. They have forged frames and slides unlike many other inexpensive brands. The internal parts aren't bad but aren't great. Once you have a good frame and slide you can replace the rest with whatever you like.

The RIA is made in the Phillipines and is about the bottom of the barrel. I assume when you say you can't afford the high end models, you are referring to those in the $2000 and up range. There are a number of outstanding models ranging just below and above the $1000/1200 range. My choice was the S&W 1911 rail model at $869 - it is a great shooter with adjustable rear sight. Never had a failure.
Its a shame that youth is wasted on the young.

I have a S&W 1911SC and a 1911PD, a Springfield Loaded Champion and a Kimber Tactical Pro II. All four are excellent 1911s that are accurate and I have not experienced any problems or malfunctions with any of them.

springfield armory GI mil spec. I got the basic GI and have already sent it back twice for novak sights, checkered front straped, delta hammer, high grip safety, and ejector slide treatment. So needless to say I should have just got a Springfield Operator for what I've got into it. Can't say enough about the Springfield custom shop. They Rock.

Look at the Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail, I think it is the best bang for a buck at around a grand. (cz-usa.com)

What to stay away from? I would stay away from a company that does not have a good customer service.

Don't forget to look at the Taurus PT1911. Available in blued or SS should be able to pick one up on the $7-800. range. I believe they have a compact out now, but not sure on that.

I see that Para has a new expert series 1911 advertised with an msrp of 599.00. I have a Para P14.45 double stacker and could not be happier with it.

I seen a Springfield Loaded at Gander Mountain for $849.00. I am a Colt lover myself but really, the Loaded is the one that caught my eye for an out of the box good 1911 for target or carry at a decent price without going semi or full custom.

I guesss someone has to say it: Go Colt. Their quality control seems to be doing pretty well now, and I can attest to that.

In the last three years, I've bought the full size stainless, the Commander stainless, and the Commander XSE LightWeight stainless, and every one of them has been great out of the box and the fit and finish has been exactly what I would expect from the oldest 1911 maker in the country.
Plus, each of them cost only around $800 and change, so you sure can't accuse them of being expensive when compared to most other highly regarded 1911's.

Plus, I'm willing to bet that your kids and grandkids will be fighting over your Colt 1911 more than any of the other brands when the time comes.
