I'm Thinking About Going to the 1911...

but I currently have an XD9SC as my EDC. I am interested in a sub-$600 1911 (RIA, Taurus, etc.). My question is about work on the pistol and reliability. I love my XD9SC's reliability. Any ammo I feed it: it fires. Any amount of time in-between cleanings: it fires. Virtually anything I do to it: it works. I like that. It's a bit boring but hey, it works flawlessly.

Am I correct in assuming that expecting the same level of reliable performance from a sub-$600 1911 is unreasonable & not likely to happen?

If you are only spending $600 on a 1911 I would go with a Springfield Armory.

SA 1911 or stick with the SA XD?

Why not step it up a notch and buy a slightly used Kimber? I just bought one in nice condition, with very fews rounds through it, for $650. It is my fourth, and they are all gems. My Ultra (3") is perfect for CC; light, small, accurate, and VERY reliable. The only ammo it won't eat is my reloads with lead SWC's, other that that, it is not picky at all.

Soo many choices out there... Have fun deciding.

new SA 1911 or used Kimber (used Kimber is probably going to be the best bang for the buck).

I can add a +1 for the Taurus PT1911. It chews on anything and everything I feed it. Close to 1000 rds through it and no hiccups.

Since you already like the XD why not consider the XD .45 ACP Compact? It's 10 rds in the short mag and very easy to conceal, with 3 extra rounds and extended grip in the 13 round mag.

I find the XD a whole lot easier to shoot than a 1911.

Do you guys find that your 1911s need a lot of maintenance?

+1 on the full size Springfield Mil-Spec. Stay away from chopped 1911's! JMO and I'll stick to it. PM me for more info on this topic as I have received hate mail in the past over comments I made on shorties and Kimbers.

Get a 5" Springer Mil Spec or G.I. and you will not be disapointed. Welcome to world of big bore single action sidearms.

You can find Colt Officers ACP's for a reasonable price still. I would look at one of these and give it serious consideration. Mine is a sweet carry gun and shooter. I replaced the spring plug with a Clark Custom drop-in and have complete faith in it.

I would agree on the SA 1911 A-1 Mil Spec. You can still get these at a reasonable (But they are going up in price) still.. I bought one, and it shoots, carries, and all of the above flawlessly.. Very good bang for your buck..
--I'M PROUD TO HAVE THE ABILITY TO BEAR ARMS--

Glock27/ KaBar TDI/ MTAC Holster. I have more also, but this combination works well..

I was mostly concerned about having to do a lot of upkeep/maintenance but it does not seem like that is an issue with you guys.
