You can't SWAP barrels in an M&P just like you can't swap barrels in the Glocks. You CAN however purchase a "conversion barrel" for a M&P 40 that will allow you to shoot 9mm. Stormlake Makes these conversions barrels for the M&P's. Handgun Barrels 1911 Glock Springfield Sig Sauer - The Official Website of Storm Lake Barrels - Available in Canada and USA

You can't just take the barrel out of a 9mm M&P and put it in .40 M&P and expect it to shoot.

I thought that the 40 and 357 sig were interchangeable, the 40 and 9mm are different case diameters and I'm thinking there would be breech face and extraction problems

9mm needs a conversion barrel. I believe Stormlake is the only current producer. also need the 9mm mags

Agreed. 40S&W and 357Sig are interchangeable, however the 9mm is not. You do in fact need a conversion barrel for 40S&W/357Sig to 9mm, like Storm Lake's.

Agreed 40 and 357 are interchangeable, but the OP had specifically asked about 40 to 9mm.

will the 9mm mags fit in a .40 hand gun? what about the extractor, will that latch on to a 9mm case? I understand that you can swap .40 and .357 - but 9mm has a different width base on the casing.

You just have to use a Storm Lake conversion barrel. The rest of the pistol stays the same. You will need 9mm mags for the best reliability. The ejector and extractor will work without change.
