    Bobbing hammer on model 60

I have a S&W model 60, 38 special with a 2" bbl. I'd like to bob the hammer on it but have heard that it may affect the performance. Any input? Thanks.

You are only going to remove a small amount of weight. If your gun is marginal in reliability with a few coils clipped off of the mainspring and rebound spring it might make it less reliable. In a properly functioning gun, it's not an issue.

no affects. been there, done that, got the t-shirt. i bobbed the hammer on my model 36 it has never had any problem. i also bobbed the hammer on my model 60. it has never given me any problems. s&w sells a bobed hammer for their guns. you can sometimes pickup them up on e-bay and other sites. that is the easy way to go. buy the factory bobbed hammer and just drop it in. nothing else to do. on my model 36 i cut the hammer myself and on the model 60 i got a factory bobbed and dropped it in. you do not have to do anything, just drop one in. no springs to cut,,, nothing.

    No problem. Go For It.
Dremel Abrasive Cut Off Wheel works great for your first cut. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!
Cut off wheels can break and send pieces flying at high velocity.

Finish on a grinder or belt sander. Do a little then STOP! - allow your hammer to cool...then do some more.
Finish up with and India Stone &/or 3M Silicon Carbide Wet or Dry paper and Cold Blue if necessary.

Is bobbing a hammer a do it yourself kind of thing? I have a Mod 85 I would love to do that with. (truck gun)

I was going to suggest you consider a Waller hammer shroud, but I cannot find their website. Perhaps they have gone out of business?

Young man: I have an older model model 60 that I cut the hammer spur off of. I did it before hammerless was so sought after. Anyway watch how much you cut off because you will use a fine emery sandpaper to smooth it out and roll the edges. It is a heavy pistol, with ammo, so really be sure you want to do it.
