    Helping someone pick a gun.

I have an older lady who lives close by ask me to help
her pick out a gun for HD and she wants to get a CHL
    later too.

She's 64 and has no experience. I am going to take her
to the pawn shop this evening. Anything I should point
her towards? I was thinking a revolver of some sort
but, I know she could learn to operate an auto too.

My mother is about this age and I got her an XD subcompact 9mm to keep in her nightstand. Of course I had to spend a long time teaching the finer points of semi auto operation, but she finally got it. Though a .38 revolver is much easier to learn.

Take her out looking, but let her make up her own mind. Answer her questions, help her think of questions...but don't make up her mind for her.
Encourage her to try shooting several makes/models, if possible.

Make sure she understands that it IS important to buy a high quality gun, not just a gun.

This is a pretty good guide, and you can guide her thru the process with it easily:

Perhaps a trip to a range that rents guns would be a good start for a newbie...

Definitely let her choose but make sure she knows how to operate reliably. i would aim her toward a good medium frame revolver. may in .38. Something like a Smith Model 10

take her to the range first, let her shoot some, and then see what she likes and can handle the best.

Alright, I couldn't get her to go yesterday. Something came up but we are going tonight if all things go right.

Got a game plan though. Once I get her in the store I got to make it count

    Trip to pawn shop report.

We looked at a lot of different guns. Had fun
    picking them up etc.

They had a couple of Bersa .380's but they
were really scratched up. Looked at a few
others and it came down to these two...

    A S&W .38 and a Taurus Ultra Lite .38
I don't think she is going to like the recoil on
    the last one.

They had a Hi point 9mm that I had to pick
up since I never held one. To be honest it's
not so heavy as everyone says. I racked the
slide..not a bad little gun. I might buy it and
    take it to the range.
