I like the S&W 442. A lot on here like the 642. Same gun, just in a different color. I think black would be easier to conceal. It comes in .38+P.

I'm not a fan of the Taurus or Charter snub revolvers. For me I'd
look for a nice used S&W or Ruger in .38spl or .357. Nice ones can be had in that price range if you look for them.

Where I live, you can get the S&W 442 for $475, that is why I suggested it, it is only a little over your criteria, and then you get the legendary S&W reliability. Good luck in your search!

The S&W 642 is your best bet. It's at or just above your limit, but you won't be sorry you spent the extra bucks. OMO

The stainless/alloy finish will hold up better in the humidity down here. It's my primary carry in the summer. It will disappear in the pocket of cargo shorts.

Check out Academy, they usually have them in stock.

I would definately go with a S&W....just a little above your price range but well worth it. Just my 2 cents!

I have the S&W 642 that others mentioned and it is definitely worth spending a little more. Around my area you can find them new for around $425-$450 if you catch a sale.

I also have a S&W 642. Carry it as my BUG...Love it! Go with the S&W.
Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.

I also suggest spending a little extra and getting a S&W.

I work at a gun store and we sell a lot of Taurus revolvers. Two of those, just this month, have both locked up the cylinders and had to be fixed. It only took minor cleaning and/or smithing to fix but that should not happen to a brand new gun.

There are reports that Taurus doesn't do a good job cleaning up their machine work on some pistols and they can lock the cylinder up. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend a Taurus for a defense handgun.
I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry.

Even if $450 is an absolute ceiling, I believe you could find a good used Smith and Wesson in that price range, if you are willing to go the previously owned route. That is what I would do if $475 new is not possible.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm a bit biased since I just bought it, but bought a Ruger GP100 for $489 and think its a great revolver!
