S&W 642 is always a good place to start without spending too much. Good little gun for the pocket.

Another vote for the Ruger. Or an old Colt if you can get one!

I also think you want a snubby. If you want something small and light, get something like the s&w 442/642.

    .357 is my favorite flavor!
Give me a real gun with a steel frame, please.
Next up to add to the collection S&W 686Plus snub

I looked at the options and decided a 642 worked best for me. The 340 is three ounces lighter and has very cool detail but at nearly twice the price... If I already had the 340 I doubt I would trade it off. A J-frame is one of those things you just keep the rest of your life. You may trade for a newer model (or not) but you'll always have one on hand. For me it's a most every day carry.

heavy enough to tame the .357 yet Light enough to carry all day.

Just don't shoot 1000+ fps lead - they will leave lead in the barrel.
Use jacketed for the hot loads.

Your poll is like asking what flavor ice cream you should get.

S&W 642 is the perfect defensive snubby.

But then, the 3 inch Ruger GP100 is the perfect offensive snubby.

GP100 for the woods and 642 for the hoods.

It all comes down to going down the dark holes after monsters. That’s what it’s all about; when everyone else is huddled around the campfire, somebody has to go out and fight.
