Taurus 1911 Aluminum Frame VS. Steel

I am in the market for a 1911 to shoot every now and then. I have read good reviews on the Taurus so I went down to Academy to look at them. They had an aluminum frame model and a steel frame model for about $50 more. Has anyone had any experience with the aluminum frame model or with the steel frame model?

Happy Memorial Day, Tallinthesaddle. I haven't tried the Taurus but have been interested in them for some time. Am going to be interested in the responses to your question.

No experience with the aluminum frame, but I do have a steel frame Taurus 1911. It has worked everytime for me. My only complaint was the Heine straight 8 sights which I had changed out. I noticed at the last gun show Taurus is putting them out with standard 3 Dot sights now.

My Taurus PT99 uses an alloy frame, Ive had no problems with it to date. Its a full size service pistol that look sto be bigger than a 1911 and it weighs 970 grams compared to my Para 1911 which weighs in at 1100 grams.

Very pleased with mine for money spent, as accurate as the Gold Cup I owned years ago. The mags leave a little to be desired and I don't care for the straight 8 sights. I will change them soon.

Yep, they sure are. The Heinies were the main reason I waited as long as I did before buying a Taurus 1911. So when I saw that they now come with 3-dot Novaks, I jumped on one. Here's the sights on mine:

Ok back on track...I'm a steel guy myself. A 5 inch pistol is not going to be (for the most part) a daily carry gun. So, for me, the weight penalty is not as important as the long term durability of steel.

Love the 1911 taurus! Never been a fan of 1911's but shot one for the first time about 2 weeks ago. I actually liked the Heine sights.

I've had a PT1911 for a few weeks. Mine was about $650. Absolutely love it. The only complaint I have is the grips. Dont care for them myself but they are easily swapped out. Want to get some wood ones but I dont know how that'd look with the black/chrome two tone look it has

I got my PT1911 when they first came out, before the prices went up.

    Best $499.95 I ever spent.

I'm hoping they do a Commander version, and a polymer-framed double-stack mag version.

Try Raasco grips. They have some cut just for the Taurus 1911.

As far as steel vs Alum. I would go with the steel, just because with the PT 1911 you will want to get better mags and some mags can eat into the aluminum frame.
