Either can have problems, but the 642 would require much less effort...OMO
Sorry, no pics.

I have carried a 442 for a while now, usually in a pocket or occasionally on the ankle. If you are looking for pics of finish check out the super duper snubbie thread, there are a lot posted in there.
So far I haven't had much issues, I clean it pretty regularly, but I do see some wear, mainly around the barrel(I have owned it for about 2 years).

642 will hold up better

I don’t believe either model is any better than the other. I have a black alloy 642 and it’s holding up pretty well, although I fully expect some high spots at some point.
Now, I also have a 1986 all steel H&K and it really has a lot of surface wear, but no apparent rust. In fact, it goes in for a new coating later this month, so 23-years isn’t too bad of service.

Neither holds up better. It's just your preference of color. I think the 442's wear looks better than the 642.
Either way I believe S&W will refinish it at no cost if it gets that much wear on it.
Training means learning the rules. Experience means learning the exceptions.
The black/blue finish on the 442 will wear, the clear finish on the 642 will peel and flake. Because of that I think the 442 wears better, or at least looks better when showing signs of use. Of course, I think it looks better new, too.
You won't notice the wear on the 642 as much as you will on the 442. The 642 is a clear finish, so you have to look closer to see the wear. Hence, the 642 holds up better from an appearance point of view. And since the only problem with either finish is appearance (not functional), advantage 642.

I have carried my 442-2 for a while (mostly pocket in Nemesis holster but occasionaly ankle carry when conditions warrent). I have very minimal wear on it and I do think that the black finish wears well and looks better than the alternative finish.

I've only been carrying my 642 for about 6 months now, usually just on weekends ( can't have it at work ) in a VMll holster and it's showing some wear already, or should I say character. Most if not all could have come from breaking in the holster, it was a tight fit at first.
My 642 is wearing well, two years of pocket carry in a very hot and sweaty Texas. All I do is clean off the pocket fluff and shoot it often....and you need to....!! regular practice with any 1.7/8" barrel revolver is required to become reasonably profficient.
