The S&W is far better made and will serve you better in the long run Don't go cheap with a CCW handgun.
When I leave the home port:

Nothing wrong with Taurus, but it aint a S&W. Get the 642, you wont regret it. I have the 637 Airweight and must say it has become my goto gun. A dream to carry, accurate, and always goes boom. I carry regularly in a c-tac and the airweight finish is still perfect. And it will hold its value better than the Taurus.

Find one without an internal lock.

That's the one you should buy.

If it has an "L" it means it's broken.

Guess my S&W 642 WITH the L is defective. Because mine goes boom every time I pull the trigger. Don't worry about the dreaded L. Ignore it. The problem...if it's not a human factor problem to begin with...is with the scandium lightweight 357 magnums...not the 38's.

Smith & Wesson are good weapons, but even they had their off times during which they were garbage. Taurus has dramatically improved over the years. If there is a gun shop in the area with a range, perhaps you could do a side by side. Any forum will have fans of one or the other, but ultimately, its what feels best to you within whatever budget constraints you may face. Personally, if I were comfortable with the more affordable choice, I would buy it and use the price difference for ammo and holster purchases.
