What did I do Wrong? BOOM!

Went to the range with the Defender today. 3rd round and the plate that rests against the barrel shattered.

Does is make a difference which direction the coil spring is facing? Looks like the spring jumped the bushing on the guide rod. I had the closed end facing out I think I made a boo boo.

Only place to get a new one is Colt. Hope they are good about it. I wll be stopping by Colt on Monday.

Anything else I could have missed. Gun has a total of 203 rounds thru it.

Do you have a users manual?

    Also, what's your serial #?

    Colt Recall
Colt's Manufacturing Company LLC has determined that the Slide Lock Safety and the Recoil Spring Guide Pad in certain Colt model pistols were not manufactured to Colt specifications and must be replaced. All of these Colt models were sold after March 2007 and the range of serial numbers affected by this product recall is as follows:

    1911 WWI Replica (O1911) From: 4597WMK To: 5414WMK
    1918 WWI Replica (O1918) From: 1001WWI To: 3431WWI
    New Agent (O7810D) From: GT01001 To: GT04505
    Combat Elite (O8011XSE) From: CG10000E To: CG11293E
    Defender (O7000D) From: DR33036 To: DR35948
Talo Night Defender (O7000NDF) From: NDF0001 To: NDF0400
And yes, the closed end of the spring goes toward the rear of the gun.

If you have not done so, go to Colt's website and download the users manual.

I have the manual its just difficult to see if the closed end faces rear. Could that have caused the problem or do you think it was the recall defect?

I'd say it's more the defective part.

I always try to check the DC Defensive Carry Guns page. The mods are good about making any gun recalls sticky. The Colt recall was posted on July 1st.

Colt customer service gets an A+ from me!

I emailed customer service after I put in the defective part request on the web link.*

Monday morning first thing I get a reply. "come by and pick up the replacment if you would like"

Short drive into West Hartford and I meet Karin who proceeds to go back into the production plant and 3 mins later I'm holding a brand new, whole newly revised spring assembly!

Doesn't get better then that in my book*

I will post pics noting the changes I was told about as well as the part # if people would like to order a back-up*

Price is $26 plus $5 shipping plus tax if you live in CT.*

Mine was free of course do to the recall but I ordered an extra just in case! I was hoping for a handful when she came back but I just got the one. Lol
    --kidding

I will say the recoil spring is all new with two closed sides so there is NO wrong way! Yippie!
    Thanks Colt!

Usually the tight end of the spring goes on the rod first.

The new spring is closed at both sides and looks uniform throughout.

new metal used is very strong and tested by Colt. The dot on the end signifies it is the newest revision.

Part# is SP577811 and be purchased thru Customer Service at 1-800-962-2658 x1450.

$26.00 plus $5 Shipping unless it's on the recall list. If it were me I would get one regardless after seeing the construction changes.
