Sometimes switching to a wheel gun in this scenario is just choosing a different problem - not being able to squeeze a double action trigger or at least not very well. Another tip for racking the slide in an emergency is to put the corner of the slide on a table or counter edge and using one's body weight to push the frame down.

I'm sorry but I am sitting here dying laughing at the vision of some petite little gal jumping up and down pushing the corner of her slide down on a table to shoot some intruder!

My wife had the same problem with the slide and I was afraid in a high stress
situation that she would forget the location of the safety.
Fixed both problems with a S&W airweight 38 snubby.

I agree with Pogo on the S&W 60 or 36......I have both....really like them both.....the 60 will shoot mags. if you so desire. A .38 special in a steel J-frame is the way to go. I alternate mine all the time, and one is always on the night stand at bedtime or the coffee table during the day. Nifty shootin' irons.
