If I could only have ONE handgun, it would probably come down to either a Glock 19 or a Ruger GP-100 .357 mag with either a 4" or a 3" barrel.
Predominantly for straight out of the box reliability and a decent defensive caliber.
It would be difficult to finalize between those two choices for me.

I own many guns and try many others.
For ease of use and carry I like the .40 Sig Sauer P250 compact.
For home defense, a 5" Kimber Custom TLE/RL II is a fine 1911 that is almost perfect. It is a factory made custom like no other I know of in its price range.

That's impossible, you know how women can't make up their mind, I refuse to choose just one
edit to add, if you insist on only one, maybe the one I got about an hour ago

A high cap, duty-length auto loader. I really like the XDm in concept although I don't own one.
Of those that I own: probably G23 or M&P40. It's a close call between those two.
If I couldn't have rifles and only one handgun, it would be something in 357. A seven shot 586 would be ideal in 4 inch configuration.

Either a G20 or G21.
That is, if I couldn't get my mitts on a P7M7...

1911. Anything by springfield armory would be my first choice.

First choice: Colt Gov't
Second choice: full size 1911
Third choice: other 5" 1911
next: other size 1911
next: xd45 or .40
next: g...l...o...c...k...It was hard to say that
Yeah, I'm old school, but I'm an old guy and learned early that you dance with the one that brought you. I've owned a lot of different firearms over the years but keep going back to the 1911. Old dog, new tricks etc.
If I'm repeating myself, or repeating myself differently, it's probably 'cause of the brain cells I've murdered and the selective memory caused by concussions, contusions and confusions. Oh yeah, and that one night in Dallas.

Colt Combat Commander or SIG P220
Blindfold me - put one of each on a table - shuffle them around - then have me grab one or the other sight unseen & I would be extremely happy with either one as an only handgun....if I could only have one.

I don't know. Today, a G19. If money was no object, I'd have Mr. Rogers build me a 1911.
