Sarco inc had rock islands for like 399 in the shotgun news magazine. Prolly another 30 for shippong and then the transfer, still not to bad.
I have a Rock Island 1911A1 I bought several years ago when they were going for $280. It's been a great gun. No issues with it. Very accurate.
Bellshire has them for $385 on gunbroker - with free shipping.

Those RIA seem to have the most stuff for the money. I would also look at springfield.

I have not seen a single bad review of a RIA 1911. I am sure if you searched hard enough you would find one, but I think it is probably the best 1911 for the money. My next choice would be the SA mil spec.
Just my .02 worth. I own a Taurus PT1911 and have had it for 1 1/2 year. Have used it in IDPA plus just plinking around. Have had zero problems, is very accurate and seems to have smoothed up a little with use. Also have a colt full size, Para lda single stack full size and compact lda single stack. Like all of them. IMHO I do not think you can go wrong with the Taurus, Springfield, Para or RIA.
Another recommendation for Rock Island Armory.
I'm very happy with my Tactical; they can be found for under $500 easily, and have pretty much everything you'd want (OK, maybe night sights, but since the Tactical's slide is cut for Novaks, it's a pretty easy replacement).

You could try looking into Legacy Sports. They have a model, the Citadel, that runs around $400 to $500. They're manufactured by RIA and they're the RIA Tactical clones. They're cheap right now because they're not a well known name, so you might want to consider hopping on that before RIA/Armscor starts raising their prices.
I lucked out a few years ago and found a Colt 1991 Commander(slightly used) for $500 and have RIA full size and compact Tacticals, each costing well under $500. All have been fine with several thousand rds thru each. The RIAs have been as reliable/accurate for me as the Colt. Had a RIA GI for a couple years and it was fine too but old eyes couldn't see sights so traded it for Tactical. No regrets.
Another Vote for the american classic 2
I have had mine for about 6 months now, about 400 rounds thru it and its very smooth. It was 395 out the door.
