Smile Topic: RIA Compact and Compact Tactical

The Gun Show is in town this weekend and I'm get'n the itch [again] to purchase a compact 1911 to carry as my primary CCW. I carried a Colt Officers Model about 23 years ago and a few Govs off and on in the last two decades, so I'm pretty familiar with the 1911 platform.

Owner reviews on the RIA C/CT models have been very favorable. The 3.5" bull barrel appears to provide superb accuracy at CQB distances,..and pricing makes this weapon a great buy for the package.

    A few questions:

    Regarding the Compact;
Do the C's only come with spur style hammer?
Do the C's have a three dot system on the GI sights?

    Regarding the Compact Tactical;
Does the CT have a three dot system on the novak style sights?
Does the CT come with ambi thumb safeties?

Is the finish identical on both models? Pros and Cons specific to the weapon..?

How do you carry your C/CT? Photos would be extremely welcomed..!!!

All info, input and commentary is greatly appreciated.

    - Jimmy

    I have compact tactical...

    Novak sights...Yes...

    Ambi thumb safty..no...

I carry in a vega shoulder holster..Two extra mags. Matte finish, great shooting gun. Very nice 1911a1 for around 500 dollars. I trust my families life on it..So far about 1400 rounds and no problems so far.

I have the compact, but would get the one with the novak sights,I would think the novaks would have the 3 dot white sights, the compact just has black iron sights. It is very accurate and reliable

I have a compact. Bought it as a GI model, but added a tactical hammer and a beavertail. I should have gotten the tactical model. I've had a few problems with FTF and some issues with FTRB, but I think I've gotten those fixed. I haven't had any problems for about 200 rds or so. Here's the RIA Officers model before I made the upgrades.

It's a nice little pistol. But I prefer my Kimber Ultra CDP II for carry. Much lighter.

    Hello, Harryball.

Thanks for the quick reply. How long have you had yours? What type of carry ammo do you prefer?

I thought the CT came with ambi safeties,..although it's moot as I really don't care for them.

    Thanks again for the info.!!

    Good info.! Thanks.

I recently read somewhere that the Novaks were plain w/out a dot system. (..?..)

That's a great looking Piece!! I actually favor the spur hammer cause it's easier to modify, if needed, without losing too much bulk/weight for primer activation

How heavy is the little gem? I guess RIA doesn't make a LW version??

BTW, I really dig the custom panels..!!!

My doesnt have the ambi safty I had it a year now....I practice with round ball and i carry round ball. Please....Im going to take heat for this, but, fmj is a heavy hitting round that spends its energy in the body cavity. Ive shot JHP and they feed very nice. I polished the ramp with a dremel and a light compound,, White if Im not mistaken. I figure that more than half of an once of lead should work. The ammo is cheap and it very accurate. Some will argure over penatration, but a 800 feet per second, I cant imagine over penatration. Big slow moving FMJ for me.

Here's a pic of mine, carry it almost everyday:

    As for your Questions:

Compact GI model, Is exactly like the Big Gi model. No frills spur hammer GI sights. Does have FLGR.

Compact Tac Model, Has FLGR, Skeleton hammer and trigger, Novack style sights NO DOTS, No ambi safety, Beavertail grip safety. I used a dremel tool and drilled my own dots in the sights.

Now there is another option so don't get confused. It is often referred to as the Compact hybrid, It has GI sites, and trigger, Skeleton Hammer, Beavertail grip safety and FLGR

Mine does fine with all the JHPs I've tried. Surprised at the velocities it produces:
    WWB 230fmj...797fps
    WWB 230jhp....851fps
    Rem 230GS.....811fps
    Rem 185GS+p..1059fps
Fed 230HS Tac...858fps (main carry load)

    Love it!
