My favorite small .45 in the hand was the Para Ordnance Warthog .45 Nighthog model w/night sites. It was quite accurate. If it had been as dependable as my Springfield xd45c I'd still have it. Alas, it wasn't and now I don't.
Check out its dimensions. If I remember correctly, it's about the size of the S'field XD9sc.
I think Bersa makes a semi small .45.

I went and held a 30 and a 36 at lunch.....not much different so I think I am going to go with the 30....plus it has a rail where the 36 does not.

During the course of the last couple of years I went from my 1911's to my Glock-36 as my EDC. I absolutely love the gun...get it, you won't be sorry.

This might be worth looking into. I recently bought one and love
    it.
+1 my EDC almost 1800 rounds not one hiccup.

I sometimes carry a Glock 30. It is below your price limit and is a great all around gun. I would recommend this gun for your purposes.
I have not tried the G36, but if price is close to the G30, I would go with the G30.
I also have a Kimber CDP Ultra II. It is an excellent 1911 choice. I know that it exceeds your budget, but it is a gun that you would not regret buying.

Glock 36 fan here -- it just seems to fit my hand particularly well.

So I held both at lunch today:

The G30---great balance feels fine, has a accessory rail for a light or a lazer and can use the larget 21 mags if I want.

The G36 -- felt top heavy in a weird way but loaded would feel better I guess and felt almost too thin for a Glock from what I am used to..mags are only for this gun and no rail but exact same length and width of the G36

Sooooo the 30 seems like the better answer especially since I will never carry inside waist band...plus I already own a G19, G26 and a Kahr PM9 and LCP for pocket coverage.

I also recommend the Taurus PT145. Nice CC .45 option.

What I like about the 36 is it is very close in size to the Colt Officer Model .45 but the weight savings is way up there. I have a 36 and really like it. Hardly notice it on my side. The 30 was just too fat for me. Like carrying a half a brick.

I have a few of the smaller .45 variety, and I must say that they are all vastly different in their feel and the ability to place effective fire on target in the shortest amount of time. To some that may all sound a little much...but in my opinion one must shoot from full load thru empty to acurately gauge the weapons merits. If I were to rate my pistols in preference order I believe some would be very suprised.
I find that when I acquire a new weapon it takes several hundred rounds for me to fairly evaluate it. But in the end, it is the weapon of individual choice that matters.

Please do! I would love to hear this and I'll bet others would, as well.
