I don't think it's paranoia so much as "you never know who's watching." There is no such thing as complete anonymity on the Internet, so - rational minds might give pause before listing exactly how many and what kinds of weapons they own, or how many rounds of ammunition are kept on hand - that sort of thing. If you wouldn't put that in your local newspaper, why would you post it here? The potential threats are political (confiscation) as well as criminal (theft).

Among friends at a range, I would have no qualms about discussing what guns I have (assuming I actually had any...). However, I do like a friend's reply when asked how many guns he had. He said "You know, in Texas it's considered rude to ask a man how many head of cattle he owns or how many acres [square miles?] his ranch is."

Do folks really think that the government is making a list of each persons response with the listed weapons, and tracing the IP address, then contacting the ISP to find the user and keeping that in a file some place?

How many here have static IP's anyway? I assume most of them are persistent, and can change any time the ISP does a reset or your modem is disconnected and reconnected. I am sure the feds have much more to do than track this kind of stuff to gain that much data.
