Yours looks pretty much unadulterated. How many rounds through it ? I would get you another set of springs from Gunsprings.com if it has a higher round count, which it doesn't look like it does. Your gun rails will really like BreakFree CLP or a light gun oil. With that matte finish a light coat of Vaseline heated with a hair dryer then lightly wiped off will protect the finish. Or Eezox, whichever you choose.

Don't run +P rounds in it. The barrel is too short to take full advantage. Best bet is heavy loads, maybe 230gr. Federal HST standard pressure.

I have a Officers Model and just love it.

Yes, with an officers model you can use any of the 6,7,8 or 10 round mags. Now a mag made for an officers model will not fit a full size due to it being about inch shorter.

I run tripp cobra mags in my government 1911, for carry I use one flush 7rd and two spare 8rd with base pads. For the range I use my carry mags as well as 10rd mags for some extra fun. Wilson and Chip McCormick also make good 1911 mags as well, though none of these options are very cheap, they are worth it. As far as any gunsmithing/alterations you want to make to this firearm, 1911Forum - Powered by vBulletin has an excellent gunsmithing sub-forum with a lot of knowledgeable people and good threads. Welcome to the club brother.

    Modifications

Being a "Lefty", the first thing to get modified would be the "ambi-safety". After that (depending on whether you get hand bite) you might want to consider a beavertail. Beyond those it all personal preference. Nice looking compact, good luck.

You can use a full size magazine, but they can be over-inserted. Chip McCormick offers a base pad for 8 round magazines that prevent that problem. There are several options.

I just carry lots of 6-7 round magazines.

I've been shooting the 1911 since Colt's sold for $82.50 retail. Bought a second 1911 when Colt came out with the Officer's ACP [your compact Colt is a later version of that gun].

My old OACP was modified by Heinie about 20-25 years ago with sights and recoil plug mods. I carry it every day.
Just got an ambi safety installed today, took about 3 hours and cost about $40 [my own hand labor].

There's definitely something that just "feels" right when I hold my 1911. The solid heft of all steel construction, the smooth trigger pull, the appearance, etc...

Yes, it's hard to own only one. Eventually, it's going to multiply.

I have tried many mags over the years and I keep going back to Wilsons but there are a few others out there that are just as good.

If there is any way you can try other 1911's with ambi safeties out, do so. I went through about 4 different brands/shapes before I figured out which one feels best for me. Even within brands there are full sized and trimmed down sizes. I think it depends on hand size/finger length. I like STI's shape best, Wilson next best. There is some metal that is NOT present on the STI that lets my hand get more on top of the safety. Some folks have said they aren't impressed with STI's safety, but I have had zero problems with two on different guns.

They have an express line for 1911 guys down at the plasma center, and will let you sell more often if you are carrying that Brownell's 1911 parts/accessories only catalog with with post-it notes all sticking out to mark pages...
